Question about claying

Due to the advice by auto detailer pro's everywhere, I went ahead and purchased a clay kit and clayed my car this evening before I apply some Klasse AIO tomorrow morning.

I've got to say, it took me quite awhile to do it, but I was VERY impressed by the results. I went by my local AutoZone and purchased the Mothers Clay kit.

I have two specific questions regarding claying:

1) How often should one clay their car?

2) Will claying your car remove any sealant and or Carnauba toppings? That is to say, will I have to reseal and or rewax after I clay my car again? Thanks!

How often you need to clay depends on your environment and how you maintain your car. Where I'm at, a minimum of every 3 months is mandatory...but for most, every 6 months will due. "Feel" your paint for contamination by placing your hand in a sandwich bag.

Precisely........If you dont have a little baggy handy, just run you fingertips real slow across a freshly washed/dried surface. If you elect to clay while washing, do it after you have rinsed. You shouldnt run clay while the surface still contains contaminants. You will find more contamination along the horizontal areas.

I think its wise to reseal after claying. It is an abrasive and will minimize your protection.

Brig, the first time i clayed a car it took forever too! Man i thought, is this worth it. But the more you do it the faster you get. I can clay a regular sized car in half an hour.

I think the first time i clayed my car it took something like 2 hours!!!

Glad you enjoyed the results of a good claying, makes a huge difference huh??

I did a work truck with rubberized undercoating overspray all over the white paint. I took about three hours but it looked awesome afterwards. I would probably wax afterwards, just because the paint under the contaminants you are removing doesn't have wax on it.

I just bought a new Silverado. I did a Dawn wash. I got clay from Zaino and tested it several places on the truck. I picked up absolutely nothing! The finish seemed extraordinarily smooth to me. So rather than do the whole truck I skipped the clay and did Z2 & ZCS. Hope I didn't screw up.

IF everything felt smooth when you ran your hand over the paint, Id say your fine, its all a matter of feel, if you are happy with the surface, then your ready for the next step.
