Question about 3M Products

Hello all:

I have recently bought two 3M polishes:

Perfect-It Swirl mark remover pn 39009

Perfect-It II Rubbing Compound Fine Cut 39002.

My questions are:

Which of these polishes is more aggressive? What other products do they compare to?

I was planning on getting Meg's #80 and #83 on line, but these were availabe at my local Pep Boys.

Thanks for your help...

Jorge.

The 39002 is *MUCH* more aggressive/abrasive than the 39009.

The 39002 is comparable to Meg's #83 and the 39009 is comparable to Meg's #9/#81 only the 39009 probably contains more fillers.

Try to *not* breathe the dust from the 39002, it's carcinogenic, but it's not like it'll kill you if you use it a few times.

Yeah, those are the typical "3m twins" found at Pep Boys. The PI II FCRC really didn't do much for me, even via rotary on a beater car and yes, the dust is rather excessive. Due to this, mine's more or less a "disgraced product". I like #83 DACP much better in terms of usability even if I have to pay special attention to it to ensure proper, total abrasive break down. Last time I used the FCRC, I used it for pure rotary practice on my "practice fenders" just to try to work on my technique alone and not focus so much on perfecting results.

Post your results :)

I found #83 to work better than the PI2RC with a PC anyways.

PI2RC seems to work better for me on speed 5, and not until it dusts, it becomes hard to remove then.

Thanks for the quick reply!

:up

I will use the 39002 on my sisters car then, it is a heavily swirled '94 black altima, and I will find something else for my own car, '03 jetta whose paint is in decent shape, some minor swirls and spider webbing.

Thanks again accumulator!

Jorge.

Thank you too Bill D. and JDM.

I will try the PIRC on my wife's beater, a 91 jetta, and see how it works.

It will probably be a while before I post my results. I still have to get some pads for my PC, any recommendations? I have been looking at the souns DAS pad kit.

Jorge.

I find PI II FC RC to be far superior to Megs #83. It works well by PC and hand. Don't work it untill it dusts and dusting won't be a problem. The PI II RC and the SMR are older products so they aren't the in thing that the herd is chasing after but they are excellent products.

:nixweiss I've worked the PI II RC these ways: hand, PC, rotary: partially, almost all the way ,until dusting. It can tackle micromarring alright but I still had trouble getting random isolated light scratches out. I find the PI III line to leave a glossier, more even shine.

I use and like the PI III line also. I find PI II FC RC to be slightly more abrasive than PI III RC. It is the most abrasive product I use by PC.

Yep, same here unless, 1z Ultra could be a little more abrasive. Anything more abrasive than these, I'd be too nervous to attempt

Sonus should be fine. I probably use Lake County or Meguiar's pads the most with my PC, but it's all just a matter of personal preference and you have to find which ones you like best. I haven't tried the Sonus ones yet and who knows, I might like them better than anything I've tried.

I *would* advise you to get more pads than you expect to need. Things have a way of just *happening*, usually at the most inconvenient time ;)

You might want to check out the garage sale at autopia-carcare.com. I picked up some pads (LC, I think) at a really good price. Be sure to use the coupon code CLOSEOUT at checkout for a 40% discount.

While we're on the 3M subject, I have a question. What's the difference between Finesse It II Machine Polish (39003) & Swirl Mark Remover (39009)?

Finesse It II Machine Polish is more abrasive than Swirl Mark Remover but less abrasive than Perfect It II FC RC. They rank like this,

PI II FC RC

FI II MP

PI II SMR
