QEW Users; my pre-soaking/ winter routine

Now that the cold weather is upon most of the US, it was time for my second season with my pre-soaking routine and cold weather washing regimen.

I use a pesticide sprayer available at Lowe's or Home Depot which runs around $20. It is used by pumping the handle and holding the wand to spray. If pumped enough, it will spray as hard as a low pressure hose. Also, it will fit in most trunks; if not, then in the rear seat footwell.

I fill this sprayer with 1 oz per gallon with QEW and 2 oz per gallon of Poorboy's Spray and Wipe. When I QEW in the winter, I use warm water (if available) when presoaking. I spray top to bottom, spending more time on extremely soiled areas.

For my winter QEW use, I use double the QEW, S+W and warm water. For instance, in my 3 gallon bucket, I will use 6 oz of QEW and about 8-10 oz of S+W to insure optimal slickness and cleaning power. I also use a chenille pad as compared to my usual sheep wool mitt due to the amount of solution it holds. I only do 1 panel at a time, drying afterwards to insure the water won't freeze to the panel.

That's a good routine....

I did my Firebird last night in my garage. I presoaked the sides with QEW in a large spray bottle (just a 2-dollar sprayer from Ace Hardware), then really saturated my Washmitt.

Seemed to work well with no scratching whatsoever.

Dried with Absorber. Then QD'd with Z6.

John: Presoak with Meguiar's Wheel Brightener and TOL's Tire Cleaner, both cut 50/50 (pictured). Those two don't need much agitation at all, then I spray them down with the big sprayer and dry last (meaning after the rest of the vehicle).

Bill: Yeah, I do something much more like that with my personal vehicles (less dirty and in garaged environment).

How are you cleaning the tires, rims and wells with that set up?

Wow! That pesticide sprayer looks very useful. Also, you mentioned you use Megs WB on the wheels. This is an acid based cleaner (which I have a bottle of and love). So, aren't you concerned about not being able to thoroughly rinse the WB without a hose?

Mikeyc: Nope, with the coupling of QEW and S+W in the sprayer, I am confident all of the WB is removed. Plus, I spritz QD on the wheels before towel drying.

good writeup sean! Did i read correctly that in your QEW wash bucket you use 6 oz. of QEW and 8-10 oz. of S+W?? That is alot of liquid and seems like it could get expensive.

Greg

Greg: Purchase it by the gallon and the price isn't that big of a hit. I'd rather not scratch my car so a few extra bucks doesn't bother me too much. Plus, I only use it on the really cold days.

If you're spraying the wheel down with your QEW/S+W mix that would probably be enough. The QEW/S+W mix likely has a basic pH which could neutralize the acid in the Megs WB.

sound good sean. I use the foam gun to presoak or the pump sprayer if hose is not available. I still will only use 1 oz per gallon, and i like to use some in the rinse bucket too.
