Purple Foamed Wool Pad Questions

Couple of quick questions for you PFW pros.

1) Do you wash/clean them before the initial use?
2) How do you go about cleaning them? Any different than foam pads? (i.e. washing machine, etc)
3) Are you guys applying product directly to the pad, or on the vehicle surface and picking it up on the pad from the vehicle?
4) Are you doing any cleaning/brushing of the pad during polishing to prevent caking?

1. yes (I don't wash them but I do make sure they are clean and nothing is sticking to them)
2.I clean them with my pads in a bucket
3.I apply to the pad,but would like to hear what others say
4.Not yet,I've only used them 3 times on hoods and trunks

I'll answer the question with a question :D Why do you wash your MF towels before use. Wash your foam and wool pads for the same reason.

I don't wash pads or towels before the first use.

I haven't washed any of my PFW pads yet. Just using the pad cleaning brush as I'm using the pad.

I apply lines of product to the paint and draw it into the pad as I buff.

I've always considered it SOP. All products first have come from a manufacturing environment, so in the least worst case they may have come in contact with lubricating oils used to maintain the machinery, in the worst case bits and slivers of metal parts. Then they go through various means of transportation dropped on floors etc. etc. etc. Not washing new towels/pads is akin to dropping one on the ground and picking it up and using it.

1.) I don't clean before first use but shake out real well and inspect.
2.) I clean the same as my foam pads i.e. in a bucket to soak after use then thoroughly clean and dry later.
3.) I apply product to the paint on horizontal surfaces and most of the time apply product to the pad on vertical/side panels.
4.) YES! I frequently clean with a brush during use to clean after just about every section.

It kinda surprises me that "some folks" (ahem....) don't clean MF towels prior to use. I think it would at least remove any trash or loose fabric that could int from the towel.

The reason I ask about the PFW, is it seems it has some loose fibers on it. I thought maybe a wash in the machine would clean that up. However, being a foam pad user for most of my serious detailing life, I didn't want to do something with the PFW that shouldn't be done.

Maybe it has worked for "some folks" for so many years that "some folks" are set in their ways.;)

Brushing out the pad as it's on the buffer will get rid of any loose debris. Washing is over kill to me.

I get the feeling that "some folks" are about to start yelling something about getting off their lawn while they re-adjust their pants to a height somewhere under their armpits. ;)


So - the PFW is okay to go in the washing machine like foam pads? Yes, no?

I clean my pfw usually half way through a car depending on how soilded it is. I just use DP foam pad cleaner with the brush to get the polish out. Then I just put it back on the buffer and spin dry.

I get the distinct impression that my Wife would prefer my pants to be adjusted to that height rather than at a ahem...somewhat lower height when I'm out working in the yard. :D

I have not bought a PFW yet been happy with the results that I get with the foam but I may order one it seems to be the flavor of the month a lot of people buying them.

I really prefer to concentrate on washing technique then I don't need to use a abrasive to correct the finish.
My DD have not had a pad on them in 2 years. :yay

OK. I want to emphasize that when I recommended trying the PFW to apply sealants, it becomes an applicator pad not a paint correcting pad.

Using it with 1 steps where you are applying pressure could cause marring. You need to apply at least a little pressure for 1-steps to do what they are suppose to do so I would not recommend the PFW for them.

You can try it for 1 steps, but if it marrs the finish don't go saying I am full of crap.:D
