Protection update

This isn't really to do with waxes or sealants but more to do with a 2 year experiment in frontal paint protection for winter and the outcome.

Up here we have a lot of - 3/4" crush used on the roads and its hell on the paint... chips everywhere. There is the option of the clear or invisable bras but for me I didn't like the visable lines or the haze in them after a couple years.

Other option is a Bra and to keep it from marring the finish it is protecting is a chore ..

What I opted for was a bug deflector on the hood and electrical tape ..

Yes electrical tape .. 3M Scotch Super 88

Last year I covered the backs of the mirrors , the leading edge of the roof and the bulges in front of each wheel well and the very edge of the fender well opening ..

It worked so well this winter in Nov I applied it to the same area as last year and I did the complete frontal area ( nose ) of the car ..

To remove it I just pointed the nose to the sun and waited 20 minutes and peeled it off strip by strip at a radical angle.

End result .. No rock chips ( even tho the tape was bruised in a few areas) no paint hazing from the sand and no tape residue.

A quick wipe with a QD after the wash and there was no evidence the tape was there.

As my car is black it wasn't too noticable .. but to me if it saved the paint .. who cares .. cost was $4.

The first pix shows some of the tape on the fenders before it was removed.

The second pix is just a brag shot of a car that just went through 4 heavy winter months ..

Nowwwwwww time to polish

Looks like a good idea. I HATE the small chips that you get from the winter sand blasting. Thanks for sharing this.

Jesstzn- The electrical tape was a *very* good idea :xyxthumbs I sure wouldn't have thought of it for winter protection!

I always carry 3M electrical tape in my "emergency kit". It sticks a lot better than most "duct tape", especially in the wet (and/or over very slick LSPs ;) ). When I did the roadside repairs immediately after the "deer incident", it was invaluable.

Heh heh, do like Jesstzn and get the real 3M stuff, don't bother with cheap imitations. There *is* a difference.

 Idea, Dee! Not sure it would work as well here since the winters aren't nearly as nasty but where you live you need all the protection you can get!

What detailing plans do you have for late August when it finally warms up? ;)

I guess I'll bump this oldie. ;)

I was wondering what width the electical tape is? How wide does it come?

I have a clear bra and a black Acura. So far (knock on plood), no chips at all. Not even one after a year and a half.

People are always asking me for photos of the clear bra  If it were visible, it wouldn't be a very good install. But, I managed to get the light just right in an overhead shot of the hood so that part of the edge is visible. Also, you can clearly see the difference in sharpness of the reflected palm fronds from the naked surface vs. the clear bra.

From three feet away, you can't see the bra.

The tape is 3/4" wide and the good stuff is about $4+ a roll and you need at least 2 rolls .. depends on what you tape over .. I do the full nose .. the mitrrors and the leading rdge of the roof .. the first 5" of the hood under the bug deflector which I put on in the winter and the leading edges of my wheel wells which bulge out. I use 3 rolls.
