Pro's... Rain Checks?

I was curious to find out how many offer rain checks to their customers.

I recently started providing anyone that paid for more than just a basic wash, a 24 hour rain check, where I will come out the next sunny day at the owners convenience and re-do only the outside at no charge.

I think this has not only attracted more clients, but also has helped keep some as well.

I tell the person if it is going to rain or snow any time soon. They have the choice to do it or not. I have washed and waxed a Benz while it was snowing outside. I have also waited 4 weeks to do somone's truck who didn't want it to be done close a rainy day. All goes with who I am working for.

I offer rain insurance on big stuff (Full details) for $5. If it rains in the next 24 hours I'll come and wash their vehicle free.

I originally was doing it for three days but then I remember, "Hey, I'm in New Orleans. It rains here all the time."

I agree with sam..I would give them the choice..I'm glued to the weather channel and let them know and choose....i have done many a vehicle in a garage while it was pouring out.

:D Intel $5 insurance....Do you really have the extra time to go back and re-wash:confused: If you weren't mobile it would be a geat idea, but being mobile..they could be on the other side of town:nixweiss

Most people don't buy it or never call. Plus, just an exterior wash takes 20 to 30mins and if this services keeps me a regular customer, then it is worth it!

I only offer it on big stuff too. Full details that are $150+

Being in Texas the saying is, "Give it 10 minutes and the weather will change!"

That is a fact. I have detailed cars on a hot sunny afternoon, not a cloud in the sky, and then you get a burst of wind, a clap of thunder and boom, it starts raining. Then as soon as it came down it's gone. I offer my clients a spruce up if they dropped a chunk of change down on a detail and drove home in the rain.

If it looks like rain or there is a better then 50% chance of rain and I do a detail then they are on their own and I let them know that up front. No rain checks in this case. We have not had a week where it has not rained at least 2 or 3 days in months here in San Antonio so when we get a clear day I am slammed. It has rained here since Thursday and more rain tomorrow. We have 2 clear days in the forecast then rain again Thurs. - Saturday.

El Nino sucks and needs to go home:mad:

I thought about that too... I'd love to offer my customer rainchecks but when May-November hits the Philippines, it rains every afternoon...

I'm sick of El Nino too. We got sleet on Monday, one day after I detailed a 740 and an ML 430. Then the sleet stayed around because Tuesday's high was 28 (normal is 63), Wednesday's high was 36 and Thursday's high was 40. Took forever to melt and the streets stayed wet through Friday. Then, on Saturday, it was supposed to be 58 and partly cloudy-wrong-45 and it drizzled in the afternoon. If it wasn't for a few garage queens, I wouldn't have had any business this week.

As it is, I need to rewash the Benz and BMW from last Sunday. Their neighbor across the street needs two cars detailed, so I figure the least I can do is rewash the cars I detailed that got slimed from sleet and the sand they put on the roads.

Normally though, I make my customers aware of the weather forecast and leave it up to them. If they get rained on when they go home, I usually give them $10 off their next service.

Other than that, my rain guarantee is: If it rains on your car, I guarantee it will get wet.

Scott,

I hear ya bro, here it is Monday and I awoke to the gentle sound of RAIN POURING ON MY ROOF! This weather pattern Texas is in just bites!

About the onlything I can say is good about this weather is that I get to take care of things around the house that are basically falling apart:p and test out some different products and/or techniques.

Years ago I would head for my dojo and get slammed around for a few hours but my body, already racked from years of detailing, was not having much fun being the "attacker" for all the new white belts:eek:

I also love your "guarantee".....that cracked me up:D

Anthony-I heard the same obnoxious sound of rain this morning also. Last week I only worked on Thursday and Friday-washed and waxed a Bentley Continental SC and Lamborghini Diablo that are stored in a warehouse when not being driven, and on Friday, I detailed a Porsche 993 that had tons of swirls from the dealer who shipped it to him (he found this 1996 993 in New York with only 15,100 miles on it), along with his Harley-then his neighbor (the guy with the Bentley and Diablo) swung by and asked me to go over to his house and detail his wife's S600. Everyone on Saturday cancelled, and the expected rain this morning scared off the guy on Sunday (the one with the ML and 740) along with his neighbor.

Oh well, I only got 1 day of in January!

Scottwax: Did you mean only one day of work?!! Ouch!

What do you do to supplement your income on those (not) dry days/weeks?
