Progressive Insurance turned me on to GEICO

After seeing all these ads for Progressive, the ones where they say they give you not only a Progressive quote, but their competitors prices as well, I thought I'd check out their website and see what it turned up.

For the record, I'm 46 years old, married, no kids, wife and I both have perfect records going back 15 years at least. Cars are a 2004 PT Cruiser Turbo, 1999 Miata, 1992 Camaro RS V6. Infinity has been getting $2100/year from me for full coverage, $1000 deductible on collision, and the minimum allowable coverage by California law.

So....Progressive was a couple hundred bucks a year more. They also gave me Allstate, Farmers, GEICO, and someone else who I don't recall now. Allstate was more than Progressive, Farmers was less than Progressive but more than I'm paying, and the one I can't recall was similar to Allstate. GEICO came up with a very, very low price, so I headed to their site to see if it was real.

You have got to be kidding me!! I am tripling the amount of coverage (Bodily Injury, Property Damage & Uninsured & Underinsured Motorist) and saving, get this.....$625 a year!! I was never all the comfortable going with the lowest legal coverage but the premiums were just crazy. Now I get piece of mind and more money in my pocket to buy detailing supplies....or overpriced gas. Whatever.....it's money in my pocket baby!!

Just thought I'd share. Apparently GEICO just loves people with super clean driving records.

   ...gieco is the real deal....the are only cheap for ppl who have clean records..and everyone in the household is the same....i pay 1300 a year for full coverage..the cheapest which i was paying was 2300....geico stands for government employee insurance company..but years back they started offering to consumers with excellent records....kinda of how usaa is so cheap but u have to be in military..anyways i have to becareful not to get a ticket because i have to renew my policy every 6 months....but who care with the money im saving maybe i get some new clothes.....for my pc...lol

I share your opinions. I went shooping after my 17 yr old son got his license this past summer......I went from $1,286 a yr for a 00 Taurus, and 99 Cuad Cab, to $2600 for the above plus a 00 Expy...Progressive wanted over $5,000.00 !! GEICO was the lowest of Mercury, Farmers, Progressive, AAA, GM, and a couple others....Quality outfit with great customer support.....

...enter the Geico parade spoiler....

I've had Geico insurance since '98 and you are all right...their prices are just outstanding. I have a clean record, I'm 32 and married.

About 2 months ago my wife was rear-ended in her Civic. A young guy in his mid 20's driving a 330Ci hit her going about 35mph (he was on his cell phone and oblivious). She, thank God, was unharmed but her little Civic sedan took a whalop...about $7K in damage.

She was not at fault but since I had had Geico for so long (and did not want to go through his insurance by myself) I decided to go through my insurance...let me tell you...sometimes you get what you pay for. The entire claim process was simply HORRID!! I had to keep the fire lit under the folks at Geico's arses to get things done. Oftentimes I would have to leave 3 or 4 voice mails with the agents...that never got returned. It would almost be like hitting the lotto to get a live body on the other end of the phone and when I did their explanation of the process and overall interest in getting things done was simply sub-par. If I had that level of customer service in my business I would have no clients.

The one thing I will give Geico props for is that when I finally did get the car taken to a body shop and assessed they had the insurance checks to me within a week. The ordeal of getting those checks, however, was a long one and just unacceptable.

We now have the car back and our claim has been sent to their "Payment Recovery Unit" which gets their money, as well as my deductible, back from the accident faultee's insurance...we'll see how long this takes. :hairpull

After this is done I am getting insurance through a local State Farm or Nationwide agent...I don't care if it is more expensive. I'll have the piece of mind of knowing that if (God forbid) we have to go through this process again I can sit in front of someone's desk until something gets done.

I always had excellent experiences through State Farm. I'd never get Progressive Insurance, the CEO is a huge moveon.org supporter. I'd hate for even one penny of mine to go to them.

I've also had excellent experiences with State Farm as I have been with them for over 30 years. It's nice to have an agent that you know and can personally call up. He's gone to battle for me on numerous occasions and have taken the headaches out of dealing with such issues. :woohoo:

LOL.....hey, no problem.

Funny thing is (well, 1 Clean WS6 won't find it funny) but someone on another board I frequent had what sounds like a very similar accident to the one you describe, but the response from GEICO was 180 degrees opposite of what you experienced. Obviously that individual thinks GEICO is awesome. I don't think one good or one bad experience, no matter how extreme the case, is the true mark of a large company. Having said that, were I in your situation I would probably have moved on as well.

Referencing the comments about State Farm - some friends of my parents were with State Farm for 25 years, never had a claim......until that 25th year. State Farm fixed the car and then cancelled the policy. Now, this happened some 15 years ago, but talk about getting people ticked off. How much do you think they paid in premiums in 25 years?

I've had great experience with GEICO and I've only been with them for a few years. I made my first claim last year when a big rig kicked up a big piece of metal and it came right at the hood and windshield of my M3. I was able to schedule an appt. with the adjuster within a couple of days and got my check at the same time. Plus, no premium increase!

Just my 2c.

the only thing I didn't like about geico is that you had to call different departments for all your insurance. one number for auto insurance, another number for homeowners/renters and umbrella coverage.

Right now we have AIG which is pretty good (no claims so far). I had amica before which was really good and rated #1 in customer satisfaction by JD Powers for a few years, but once I moved to AZ their premiums were insane. With AIG, I cut that from ~2K for all my insurance to about 800.

my only advice is that if you ever move, make sure to go insurance shopping again. the person was was cheapest at location X may not be the cheapest at location Y

another great insurance company that has been around just as long if not longer than allstate, geico, state farm, etc... is WAWANESA and they've been around since 1896 (they were cheaper for me than the formentioned, as long as you have a good driving record. www.wawanesa.com :up

p.s. when i went insurance shopping, i mentioned wawanesa and ALL the places i went to had respect for them and a few employees (told me to go with wawanesa even though they weren't suppose to say so) actually had a policies with them. :lol

Just read the small (and very small) lettres in your contract EXTREMELY well...

You can only one time be the duck, but that's enough to remember it for the rest of your lifetime...

After selling my detail business a few years back, I since have been working for Travelers Insurance as an Auto Appraiser. When we get an assingment to inspect a vehicle that was damaged, we are required to make contact with that person the same day and then inspect it no later that the next. So far, my average is 13 hours from the time the accident gets called in to us to the time I'm done inpecting it giving either a shop or the customer an estimate. The payment is sent out no later than the next business day. All the appraisers have Wireless laptop computers with us so pictures, estimates and notes are sent to home office immediately. Sometimes were a little more expensive than the next guys, but our service is second to none. Also, it's our policy to not use ANY aftermarket parts and most insurance companies will use them on anything and everything. Even if you car is 2 days old. Progressive is known for this.

HAs anyone used Esurance? Im currently with State Farm but can get a better price from Esurance. I also wil now check Traveleres, Geico and Wawanesa. When we move in spring my rates will go up because we are moving just over the line into the next county, same crime rate, income brtacket, etc so I dont get it?

I have esurance. The rates seem good for me, have not tried to make any claims. No rate changes over the 3 years I've had them.

I have Geico for my work truck which is only 39 bucks a month for baic California coverage and for full coverage I can not see sending $$$$$$ on it, for body work i can do my self for a fraction
