Product Review: Lake Country Ultra Fiber Pad

Hello everybody! Recently I received the new Lake Country Ultra Fiber pad and wanted to share my experience with you. It was a true honor and much thanks goes out to Lake Country and Eric Dunn!

The test subject was a 2005 Dodge Neon SRT-4 ACR that belongs to the owner of Realtune Performance. Since the car was black I figured it would make the perfect showcase for this pad, good or bad. To start off, here's a shot of the true condition of the paint on the entire car:

I'm not going to cover the details of the pad, that's best left for Eric Dunn and Lake Country to release. I will say though that the material the microfiber is attached to is much firmer than the other pads on the market.

Here are a few shots of the pad and in comparison to a used Meguiar's 5" cutting disc:

For my test, I used the Meguiar's W67DA backing plate mounted to Griot's Garage Professional 6" ROP, Meguiar's D300 microfiber correction compound, machine speed 4, and paint was cleaned with my home brew cleaner. ;)

I was having a tough time capturing the true condition of the paint with my phone, which was used so that I could send pictures right away without waiting. Here's the best picture I have that shows how well the pad finishes down:

As you can imagine, the polishing step was an absolute breeze and required very little effort. Talk about saving time! This alone should pay for the pad.

Now I did not capture a true 50/50 picture and I apologize for that. I will be using the pad again soon and plan to run a test with it using M105, the machine at various speeds, as well as working on polishing with M205 and Optimum Hyper Spray Polish. My first attempt at using M205 was not pretty at all, so I stuck with Lake Country tangerine hydro-tech pads!

Final Thoughts:

In my opinion this is the absolute best microfiber pad for compounding. With the low profile and firm center, it almost feels like you have the microfiber material mounted to just a backing plate. I didn't use nearly as much pressure as I do with the other cutting pads on the market. I experienced zero issues with this pad from start to finish. It's much easier to keep clean using a pad reconditioning brush or compressed air (my favorite), and clean up is really easy because the center material doesn't hold residue like the other foam cores. I really loved the Meguiar's cutting disc due to the lower profile center and still love the Optimum polishing disc for the cushion while finessing the paint after compounding. However, once I get the hang of this pad with a polish I think it will be a cost saver in the future.

Well that concludes my write up. Thanks for reading and I'm open to all comments and questions. :)

Nice review! Looks like you had the same iPhone issues with black paint that I did today, but glad to see you were able to get before/after shots.

Yeah, the clarity was there but I just couldn't quite catch it. Eric asked for some pictures and I didn't want to make him wait so I took them with my phone. I have some that I took with my Canon point and shoot but no sun pics since I finished at 3am. I'm currently waiting for some from the owner. The cut and finish of these pads is straight up ridiculous. I followed up with Optimum Hyper Spray Polish on a low profile tangerine hydro-tech pad and it was so easy. I should have HD Polish next week and will be doing another black SRT-4 in early August.

Very nice review Richard. How did would you compare the LC's cutting pad to Meguiar's cutting disc on curved body panels and over trim pieces? Does the stiff backing conform well?

I had the same question myself! Thank you for your review Richard.

Thanks Todd! That's the tricky part about this pad vs. the Meg's pad. While this one does cut and finish better in my opinion, the Meguiar's pad has a little more contour ability. As you can imagine the Optimum pad with more foam flexes even more but requires more downward force in my opinion. While I only used this on a Neon and not a Ferrari, I can tell you that this thing was easy to use over the curves of the body and where sharp body lines are I was able to edge better with this pad than the other pads on the market. The pads with more cushion in the middle provide more surface contact at times which is primarily what we shoot for in a pad. With that being said, using a pad with more cutting ability makes up for what little bit of lost time you may experience with those few slight instances where you don't have full contact. That's why I noted in my review the Lake Country offering is easily the best cutting pad on the market in my opinion, or soon to be.

Any issues with fibers coming off?

Which pad do you think performed better?

The only fibers that came off, which were very few, were some from the edge that were just a little long. As far as performance, read my statement above.

The Meg's backing pad breaks apart and the MF comes flying off. Leaving only the shredded padding stuck to the backing plate. This has happened to me twice on brand new pads. Also the center seems to come unglued and eventually you have major failure. I love how well the Meg's pad work but the construction is just junk. I'm hoping that since the backing material seems to be a bit more firm they will last longer. No more looking down at the backing pad and only seeing maroon.

Thanks for the review Richard. It's always good to have options. I'm with Fergnation, the Meg's pads are wonderful, as long as they stay together....

Thanks for the great review Richard.

Many thanks to you! I have a couple more corrections scheduled and will be putting them to use again. Hopefully I can capture better pictures!

So far these are terrific! I have had other pads separate after one use but I was hard on these and they show no signs of giving in just yet. Crossing fingers!

Thanks Mike! The Meg's pads are great and will have a place as well as the Optimum pads, but for hard core cutting these will be my go to as long as production doesn't change.
