Product cost per detail

Hello guys...

I was wondering, have any of you tried to figure out how much product quantity you would use on a regular job (wash, wax, interior, dressings); and the aproximate cost per ounce.

For example:

NXT Car wash:

$7.59 for 64 oz. (¢11 per oz)

3 oz for a small to medium car

that would be ¢35 per wash...?

Am I figuring this out correctly...?!?!?

Anyways you get the idea.

I know there a LOT of variables involved, but has anybody tried to figure out how much is really spent on products per detail?

Alex

Below are some numbers off the top of my head for what it takes me per full detail. . .

$5 Combined Insurance

$3 Fuel

$6 Food (Me fuel)

$4 Clay

$3 Polish

$2 Sealant

$4 Wear on pads/towels/brushes

$1 Dressings/Conditioners

$1 RO Water

.50 Soap

.40 Degreasing/APC

$?? wear on my vehicle/equipment/depreciation of each.

$?? Amount it takes to gain a new client/ keep an old one.

$?? The unexpected!

. . . looks to be about thirty bones a job- six to seven an hour without considering the last three. I'm sure i didn't account for a few things. Please add to my list as you see fit.

counting product use only is only part of the cost....you have to factor in products, wear and tear on your car if you are mobile, and gas, and things that affect the detail only....you dont count the necessities like having to eat because you would have done that anyway without the detail...and you cant really count insurance because its there no matter if you use it for one car or 100 cars....its the same cost...

so products and wear and tear on your car/gas....depends on how far away....i have done some in my neighbor hood, and some about 15 miles away....thats about 8 bucks in gas alone....but I get paid for it in my estimate pricing....two identical cars are not the same amount if one lives next door and one lives 20miles away!

so product cost - about 10 bucks for a full detail

car cost - depends on the mileage!

Steve brings up a good point. I wash a bunch of my mf's and pads after each detail, and if I had to guess I'd say the detergent is probably the most expensive product per ounce that I use. In terms of car wash, polishes, etc.. I think those costs are negligable. Even waxes/sealants require so little that you're talking under $1 per use (give or take). Of all the detailing products I'd agree clay is the most expensive per use followed by (in my case) something like Spray & Wipe (which I use a lot of) and maybe Folex.

Well, this takes the scope of your post to the max...

My TOTAL expenses (overhead) for 2005 were $88,000/52/6= 282 per day.

(Actually, considering Holidays, etc., the real number is more like $305/day.)

For a ten hour day, that's $30 per hour, just to pay expenses.

Anything we do beyond that daily 'breakeven' is profit.

Hope this 'different take' helps.

Good Luck.

Jim
