Product comparison: A2Z vs. Orange Blast Wheel Cleaner

Well, I was nearly out of A2Z, so more wheel cleaner was on the list when I went to the store. I found, right near it, Greased Lightning's Orange Blast Wheel Cleaner. Larger bottle, and cheaper, so I figured what the heck, I'd give it a shot.

For the best direct comparison, I decided that I would follow the directions on each bottle exactly, one application, and no brushing. The wheels to be cleaned:

Both wheels were fairly comparable as to how dirty they were. The difference in taking the pictures on the sun side vs. the shade side makes the left one look cleaner, but they're really pretty much the same.

A2Z, per the instructions, is to be applied to a dry wheel and allowed to sit for 30 seconds before being hosed off. The Orange Blast instructions call for a pre-rinse of the wheel, application to the wet wheel, and to be allowed to sit for one minute before being hosed off.

Sorry for the poor focus on the A2Z side. Looked fine on the camera's little screen after I took it. ;)

Overall, pretty comparable results. Both products cleaned up their wheel nicely, and both left a similar amount of brake dust that would need to be scrubbed. I had enough A2Z left for the brush scrubbing of two wheels, and used the OB to scrub the other two. Couldn't tell much of a difference.

The A2Z's foaming applicator is definitely superior to the OB's regular spray nozzle. The foamed A2Z clings to the wheel a lot better, where as the OB starts running off as soon as it hits. Didn't think of it until after I was done with all the wheels, but I'm going to keep the A2Z bottle and pour some of the OB into it to see if it will foam up in a similar manner. When brushing, the foamed A2Z is definitely nicer to work with.

For the price, I'm quite pleased with the Orange Blast. Usually when you go for the cheapie, you find out why it's the cheapie. In this case though, the cheapie actually does a good job.

Thanks for the review, I've seen this stuff at WalMart, but never really though twice about buying it, maybe I will give it a try.

Nice review!

I'd just switch the nozzles. That way I still know what's in the bottle without having to remember that I put something else in it.

Great job...I too saw the Orange Blast stuff at Wal-Mart...maybe I'll buy that and use it on others cars and save the premium stuff for yours truly!

Hey Kaos,

Great review on some products we can pick up right down the road :) Very thorough. In my use of both products (the past and again when I saw this thread), I found that either one will need agitation to completely remove the brake dust. My subject was a car that had not been washed since the first of October, so I expected this.

I found the Orange to cut through the brake dust easier/faster than A2Z when used with a soft bristle brush. I also found the gleem/shine left behind with Orange was greater than A2Z.

I agree with you on the spray though, which is the only thing it really lacked.

You know, I might be wrong but I don't think the A2Z top will be able to unscrew from the bottle. I agree the nozzle is nice; I think I tried to unscrew it to put on another bottle but it kinda has those backward teeth to prevent unscrewing. Check this out and see if it is true with you.

The Orange Blast has some Oxalic Acid -- whatever the heck that is -- which other cleaners might not have. So they may strengthen it a bit by using cheaper acid to do the dirty work. Sort of like the way gasoline companies used to boost the octane ratings in the old days -- cheapest way was to add lead.

Not sure if that Oxalic Acid or similar stuff is in other cleaners or in the same proportions.

Might be that there's no difference between most/all of these cleaners, and we're knocking outselves out over minutae. Sorta like the difference between buying 92 octane gas and 93 octane!

FWIW, at this stage, I'm gonna probably use the Orange Blast I bought on older cars (not mine!) and really filthy wheels that have gone years without cleaning. On my car and newer ones, I'm using my A2Z and my Poorboys (which I haven't tried yet, but am dying to try out. Almost sorry I EX-P'd my wheels -- darn things aren't getting dirty! Eh, maybe a relative has a new car with dirty rims..... :) )
