Problem with discoloration/'stain' on rim's, can't seem to fix. Suggestions on a fix

I have a 1992 Dodge Stealth with stock rims.

These particular stock rims are aluminum, and came with a matte look to them.

When I purchased the car, the rims had been previously taken to a machine shop and polished giving them a generally smooth and shiny look.

Although I have tried to take care of them, sometime last fall before I stored the car for the winter, the rims got some sort of discoloration or stain on them.

It almost looks as if some sort of liquid got on the rims and you can see streaking where it 'dripped' off the rims.

I am wondering if anyone has thoughts as to what I can do to get them looking good again. I have tried a number of different products, but nothing really seems to fix the problem.

I started off using a number of different rim cleaners - no luck.

I then used some KAIO to see if that could help clean any residue off - no luck

Next I used some PB SSR 2.5 with a yellow 4" LC pad on my PC - this had the most effect, and it certainly helped to polish up the areas that I could reach with the pad; however there are still lots of areas that the PC couldn't reach and they are still looking flawed

(I also tried getting into the tighter areas by hand, but it seems as though nothing but the PC at speed of 6 would even make a dent in the problem)

I am at a loss here. Perhaps I need something more aggressive like Meg's wheel brightener except that the directions state that it is not for use on polished aluminum or anodized wheels.

Here are a few pictures that show what I am referring to much better than I can describe.

Sorry for the extra picture width, but I felt I should attach some large pictures to more clearly show what I am describing.

TIA for any suggestions,

Scott

Ever take your car through a touchless car wash?

The only way to fix that is to use a proper aluminum polish/ruge with a cotton polishing wheel. Caswell sells some great metal polishing kits. DO NOT use a wheel brightener on those wheels.
