Pricing idea

I know a lot of you price based on the package. what if someone wants that package but not one of the things included with it so they try to say well skip that step and you can knock the price down to this.. Well what if you just have a price sheet thats totally customizable

• Microfiber Dried

Small (2 Door) $25 Medium (4 door) $30 Large (SUV/Truck) $35

+ $5 Full Vacuuming Floors / Seats/ Trunk & Complete dusting and Wipe down of interior & Dusting of Air vents

+ $20 Quick Wax (1 Month Protection)

+ $45 Clay Bar Treatment (Remove stubborn Contaminants on Paint to make paint feel smooth)

+ $150 2 step Polish to remove Swirls & Fine Scratches & buff to a high shine & Hand Waxed (Depends on size of the Vehicle

you can do that,

but with things like clay bar/polish, some people just charge hourly in the event that the car turns out to be more of project than a run of the mill task.

So you'll probably want to make it clear what they're getting in terms of results (like I'm sure you'll get some idiot who completely trashes his car and expects that 150 will bring his car to show car status, when most of us know it's just not realistic)

but I kind of like where it's going =]

Yea well thats why its specified as a 2 step for 150 so whatever I can get out with M105 and M205 is whats coming out which is usually 80%+ but if they want 3 step or 4 step thats when it starts going up. You think those prices are too high or are they good?

Lol at this juncture I really don't know if I'm the guy to ask, I mean it seems ok, but I usually just charge by the hour to make it easier.

pricing would also largely depend on a lot of things like for the 150 2 stepper, how long do you think you'll be working on the car? for instance, (not saying it's necessarily the smart thing to do--I chose this route out of sheer laziness you can call it--but I don't have time right now to sort it out) I charge 55 an hour.

If the two step is going to take you 4-6 hours which is typically the minimum time it would take me, then that 150 breaks down to about 38 bux an hour if it takes 4 hours, then say the amount of wear on a cost of the pads is say 4 bux per car (these are just random numbers) because i figure each job will probably take at least 3 pads per step so 6 pads wearing down, then the 105/205 figure you'll use...ionno maybe $1dollar worth of product then the allocation of say the electricity ionno...say $1. then the insurance, tax etc.. etc... etc...

After you break it all down assume each car runs you say 15 bux

150-15=135/4=33.75 per hour....ASSUME 50% tax about 17 bux an hour. Honestly for a 19yo, i don't think it's a bad deal.? lol but i mean...these are random numbers...so obviously you'll have to fill in your blanks

In my experience (in both the detailing world and elsewhere), customers don't like picking and adding up their own package. People generally don't have the time, patience, and in some cases, the understanding to be able to build their own package.

I offer nothing but packages, except when it comes to paint correction (which I do very little of) which gets charged simply an hourly shop rate. Every once in a while I'll get someone asking if they "skip this or that" how much less it would be. I'm not sure how most Autopians handle their pricing, but my packages are pretty generous. If I were to split everything out and bill it separately, or charge everything by how long it took, my packages would end up costing double what they already do. That's the whole point of a package, you get a deal for "buying it all". Generally I'll knock a few dollars off if someone doesn't want a particular item done, but in general, nearly everyone just takes the packages as they are.

Also, I might add that the customers that penny-pinch and try and knock out items within your packages to get a better price aren't necessarily the customer-base you want to begin with...

I tell everyone that I charge about $65 per labor hour and will be happy to adjust my services to meet their needs but it may cost more. I feel people appreciate that I don't use smoke and mirrors to get more money.

I agree with WAS. The experience needs to be pain free. You will find most customers may not add anything due to the perceived complication. In the past I have thought about doing this - add 2 services for $X.XX, 3 for $X.XX, and 4 for $X.XX. Although in the near future I may just charge a fixed hourly rate for any and everything. My logic is if you keep your vehicle clean why should you be lumped in the same boat as those who do not maintain their vehicles.

Man, I wish I lived somewhere that I could get the $50 -$65 an hour... :/ I live in a poor county, were the avg year income is around $20,000. Most of my int details and a wax is $75 for the WHOLE job... Of course if you want more of a paint correction its a lil more, but still nowhere near the money you guys are getting in the big towns. I know, I need to move lol

lol well if it makes you feel better--often times the price is more out of necessity than it is anything else, between taxes, rents, and inflated expense (I live in NYC) the cost of living is just higher, so essentially, you have to charge more and in many cases people in that area understand that it's just how it is lols...

Yeah, your right. I bet the cost of living here is half or less of what it is in NYC!

I got rid of my a la cart type menu two years ago...best move I could have made. Its much more simple on my and on the client.

and really, 5 bucks to vaccum? what it if takes you 45 min to vacuum? Thats the reason why I have my pricing at a range...like 250-300. if its an easier job, then its 250, if it takes more work, then its 300, etc

Here is one of my packages..This is what most people want and its my most common package...I have a higher end one ($55)/no SUV up charge that offers rainx, leather etc. I don't do that to try and sell it but more or less get people "settle" for $40 package.. I typically say air freshener is $2 extra and it sells like hot cakes. Good luck and hope this helps!

ALL that for $40 / $44 ?!?!?!?!?!?! Up here, the wash alone for an SUV is $20, and that doesn't include wheel wells or jams.

We offer packages, and also detailing/services by the hour charge. I usually tell my customer we can charge by the hour, but they're getting the best deal by purchasing a package.

John

A la carte pricing is a bit confusing for most people. Carefully design several packages based on what your target market is looking for. Know exactly how long, on average, the package will take you, and price it accordingly. You can also have a few choice ad-ons available as upgrades to the packages.

What do you typically charge for something like that? It's so hard with the recession and all these freaking $4.99 wash w/ free vac popping up all over

Add in a vinyl dressing and a seat / carpet shampoo and you're at $240 for me. And I'm the cheapest in my city. The going rate is about $300.

Price is not the top reason why people purchase something. Confidence in a business is number one, followed by quality, and service. Price is number 5, I believe. Work hard to establish your professionalism and reputation for quality and service. Do this with your marketing strategy.
