How many of you have done press releases to help market your business? I had never done one before until I returned from Air Force One. A local public relations agent did the write up. Within about 2 hours it showed up here... Santa Barbara - Goleta - Noozhawk.com Your News and Information Source Local News

I had numerous people coming up to me or emailing me where I teach full time and giving me compliments. The exposure from this single site has been very good this week. We also sent the release to all the local news agencies and are hoping to get it run next week in the papers.

Pedro- Dominican Republic- has had 3 TV shows interview him and 2 radio interviews.

My idea is for you to create a situation for a release and then get your business in the news. Maybe do a local community event, teach a car washing class to kids, etc. Create something with the community in mind and then do a press release. From what I hear, they do not all work out, but if you get the right person to write it, or someone that knows the local writers, that helps.

I had taken a seminar on Guerrilla marketing and started a thread about it a long time ago but lost the free-time to be able to keep up the discussion. One of the biggest points of the seminar was press releases. They had recommended sending out once every month.

I'll see if I can dig out my workbook and make a few more points later this afternoon.

Okay, I'm pulling this off my Guerrilla Marketing book (by Jay Conrad Levinson and Al Lautenslager, the one who ran the seminar I attended):

What do I publicize?

Seventy percent of what is published in newspapers is the result of a press release. Press releases are used to communicate news to media outlets. The press release states the who, what, where, when, and why of your news. The key word here is news.

This is the hardest part I find in writing a press release. The point of your release is to promote your product or service, but it must be written in an objective bias. Journalistic objectivity can refer to fairness, disinterestedness, factuality, and nonpartisanship. How do you talk about yourself without being biased?

Press Release Idea Questions

1. What events are happening within my company and/or industry this week, this month, this year?

- new web page launch, new business to the area

2. What current events and/or events in the news can be tied to my business, service, or people?

- local car show, cruise in, community cookout, charity car wash

3. What new products or services are planned for introduction or launch?

- new concierge service, new distributorship, authorized Meguiars reseller

4. What opinions do I express strongly as an expert that would serve as news or that could benefit others?

- I would figure that anyone here on Autopia can consider themselves as an expert. Just pick a topic and and inform the public on something.

5. What surveys have I done that produced results that would be news to the public?

- You can conduct your own survey and produce the results in your press release. Take a look at this to see how you can manipulate answers to benefit your cause. YouTube - Penn and Teller Defend Ron Paul vs. Luntz and Fox News

I love Penn & Teller.

6. What events can I produce to generate attention - contests, celebrity appearances, tent sales, celebrations, educational seminars, demonstrations, etc.?

- prize donations to local raffles, contests for free details, detail seminars to car clubs

The headline is the one thing more than anything else that can dramatically improve the results you are getting from all your marketing.

"On average, five times as many people read the headlines as read the body copy. It follows that unless your headline sells your product/service, you have wasted 90 percent of your money..." - David Oglivy
