prep work before zaino

i have doing some research and my head is about to explode!!!

i watched the meguiars vieo and was all set but after reading some of the posts here im more confused

my situation is i bought a 2003 corolla (black) and dealer of course left micro scratches. im going to strip the wax and put some zaino on, but before i do im gonna prep the paint. according to carguys post he said #9 swirl remover was the least abrasive, but the video showed them preping with the deep crystal stuff. i know thats their low end stuff so i was thinking about using the medallion stuff or scratch x. i liked the fact that scratch x does not introduce new scratches, but now im hearing #9 is less abrasive??? i plan on doing this by hand and they say scratch x is made specifically for this. also after surface prep and before tha zaino are their any other steps you would recommend(i.e. polish)

sorry so long

A common rule with abrasives, the bigger/deeper/worse the problem the product was made for, the more abrasive.

Your doin it by hand?!?!? You might want to try the scratch x on a small part to see if it takes out some fo the swirls. Doing it by and won't be liek doing it by machine. Your going alot slower so the results will be different. Still great, but different.

Try it and i it leaves marrs, then go to SMR.

Be very careful especially with black clearcoated finishes. Is the surface marring real or just the normal surface reflections of a black finish normally not detected in lighter colors. You maybe chasing your tail and about to create "real" swirls.

I would only use Scratch X as a test of the ability of a filler to hide this imperfection. Why? If Scratch X works there is a possiblity that Z5 will do the same and in a lasting fashion. I am certain that before you apply any Zaino that the Scratch X must be removed and there goes your swirl filling.

Go with several coats or as many as it takes to satisfy your taste of Z5. There may be spots that just will not be hidden (filled). At this point you might consider doing some spot SMR'ing (#9) to remedy.

If this car is seriously swirled (marred) take it back to the dealer and have them evaluate the damage. I am not recommending the dealer do the repair but a new car requiring a complete SMR procedure is unacceptable unless the dealership is using the worst prep techniques know to man.

The bottom line is the a black car and owner has to have a slightly higher level of surface imperfection tolerance because of black's lack of ability to mute this marring (i.e silver has a high muting effect of surface marring)

Just something to consider. :wavey

Congrats on the new car:xyxthumbs

I may be wrong but I believe scratch X is more of a spot type scratch remover and not something to use on a larger area. With micro scratches I would just clay it and use z5 and that should prep the surface.

I am not a zaino user so am not sure if Z5 is their equilvalent to AIO. If it is then it should do the trick for you.

Yeah, this came up a few days ago. Scratch-X isn't good to use over the whole car. Z5 isn't the same as AIO - it won't polish or clean. According to Zaino, think of Z5 as a really durable glaze that fills swirls. Some say this works, some say it doesn't. YMMV :nixweiss

Z-5's swirl filling abilities were a bit disappointing to me on black. But then again, I've been told that what I've got on my car is spider-webbing underneath the clear-coat.

Z-5 did work wonders however, on a few other colors, like white and maroon.
