Practice Panel Price?

Anyone know what body panels are going for in scrap price?

Reason I am asking is... I'm getting sick of going door to door at body shops asking for panels. They treat me like am asking for a free paint job or something. I offer to pay and still no luck. So today I went to a place and asked if there was anyway I could buy some of there junk panels. The guy said no they have an agreement with a local scrap yard that buys them. So then I told him I just wanted a few to learn to rotary buff, he still insisted no. So they I told him I would pay more than that scrap metal place pays him. He took down my name and number and said he would give me a call. So now I'm wondering how much I should be expecting to pay. I did google scrap metal prices but I don't understand the codes and such.

Thanks in advance.

Did you try going to your local scrap yard and getting a hood or fender? Or better yet even a junk yard where they have full cars and you could just take the hood and fenders. Usually cheaper that way.

Oh sure, now you tell me. :)

I called one junk yard and they wanted $200 for a hood. I thought that was crazy. It better not be near that much. I'm willing to go $20-30 for a hood. Maybe I'll try a scrap metal place too.

Call the junk yard and tell them you want a junk hood or junk fender! Tell them it can have a corner ripped off or whatever, you just want a good flat spot to use for practice. Shouldn't have to pay more than $5 or $10, if not free...

When the guy told me $200, I told him I just need a junk one for practicing a rotary. I said it could be smashed up, it didn't mater. Then I told him if he wanted I could bring it back when I was done and they could have it back for free. He then told me that he wasn't in the business to give things away, that the cheapest panel he had for any reason was $200.

I was tempted to just buy a junker car for a few hundred but I really don't have the room to keep it.

Keep looking man, Don't give your money to those idiots.

An idea is to post on Craigslist. I am sure you will find some there!

If it's a straight panel with nice paint, that can be a much cheaper alternative than getting a new hood and painting.

For a practice panel, though...naahhhhhh

Tell 'em you want a dented something that is just scrap.

Some boneyards are very proud of their parts any more. :grinno:

Rumor on the web has it that they have good prices and are nice people. I would call ahead and ask what the cost of a hood or trunk lid is. If you think its high then ask the cost of one with dents and major defects is.

edit: and if those fail

Auto Salvage Yards in the Fox Valley - Appleton, Oshkosh, Neenah, Menasha, Kaukauna, Kimberly, Little Chute, Combined Locks, Darboy, Sherwood, Greenville, Hortonville and More of the Fox Cities, Wisconsin

Ask your friendly neighborhood fire department after they have a drill on the extrication tools!

My FD gets a few junkers each month to rip apart for practice. One fo the evoutions is to pop the doors off using the spreaders and the cutters, another is roof removal using the cutters

The "victims" are going right to the crusher afterwards, so there is no worry for a junkyard to lose money on salvagable parts.

Thanks everyone. I didn't want to think I was just being cheap. :)

corvettecrazy, thanks for the info. Are you local?

DaGonz, I never thought of that. Two of my friends from high school that I don't see much anymore are fire fighters. Good reason to stop by and see them.

Didn't call any of the places yet. I was out of town for a few days. I'll probably wait till the end of the week. I have a cold now and just want to go home and go to bed. I sold my truck and now I have a Jeep Liberty so I have to make sure one of my truck friends are free also. :)
