I love those gantry setups! Exactly what I want to build when I get a bigger shop with a "correction/inspection tunnel."

For now I'm rocking this:

(ignore the crap on the floor, I had to move stuff during remodeling)

All of the existing fixtures were retrofitted to T8HO and a few new fixtures were added a couple years ago. I also use a single T5HO that moves around the vehicle with me to illuminate the sides, rockers, or interiors (pay no attention to the wall... if anything it should tell you how old the pic is).

I bet the white ceiling helps alot right?

Definitely. I'm also going to re-paint the lower half of the walls to a light grey, and put down black and white racedeck tiles next spring. Should make it even brighter and help me keep things cleaner.

How do you guys see marring under those fluorescents?!?

I mean...sure, they're great for texture issues, and can make *certain kinds* of marring jump out at you, but for swirl/etc. spotting they just don't work for me  I have dozens of tubes, but I gotta turn 'em all off for inspection/correction.

I did some upgrading to my garage this year. I had a polyaspartic floor laid (4X's stronger than Epoxy and UV resistant too!) as well as I had the walls and ceiling painted white with a washable paint. I kept the old lighting system which is very nice. I have 4 giant CFL's that are rated I believe at 6500 colour temp and are 105W. They are a foot long and 4" diameter. I have 2 above the garage door that are not visible in the pics I took. I would like to research replacing the T5's I have with LED inserts on the florescents. That would be my next upgrade if I do anything.

^^^^^ definitely Chad!

I am gathering ideas for something to come! Hopefully in the next few months Ill be able to take some pics!!!!

I haven't taken any official shop photo's yet as I try to finish up the new location, but here's a couple quick snaps of some of the cars/bikes in there over the past couple weeks so you can look in the background at the lighting. Just T12's along the walls/ceiling. Ideally I'd love to upgrade to some T8's or better. I'm never satisfied with lighting. I still have a head light on when I'm doing interiors. And everything goes off and I go to solely halogens for correction work.

I remember being about to see compound marring on the white Lincoln in the 1st 2 pics at the top. (this was at a body shop). As I know you're aware, lighting is one of those iffy things and there's a ton of variables involved with defect detection. Seems as if the darker the work area, the better the marring stands out with ala carte lighting. Generally, too much bright light will wash out your defect detection abilites.

And i believe for this reason is why the bulb in the 3M sun gun is only 35watts and not the 50watt version

And who makes those light set ups the VW and white car was under?

I agree. I've worked in a STUNNING lighting tunnel full of fluorescent lighting and was very unimpressed with its ability to show flaws. Halogen is where it's at for me.

Looks to me like the gantry that VW is under has halogens mounted to it as well.... which is ultimately what I'd want -- multiple kinds of light sources available for spotting different types of defects. The fluorescents make for excellent general task lighting, too.

I agree. I would love to have a lighting tunnel to work from. But it's no substitute for halogens for correction, for me.
