Porter Cable XP, only works on speed 6, huh?

Hey guys - was using my PC today to apply a sealant, stopped working. (just stopped, was on speed 2), I put it aside and grabbed my other DA but later I was messing with the PC (opened it up, looked fine, cord seems fine), and it wasn't working at all...played with the dial and at speed 6 it comes on, works no problem (kept it going for awhile), any setting below 6 and it stops.

Ideas?

Cheers.

Picus- Sounds like your local PC place is gonna be doing a rebuild. Probably won't cost much.

Or are you feeling adventurous and planning to DIY it?

Well I don't need the PC so it's not really a pressing issue. I suppose I will have it rebuilt eventually, I played with a bit but no luck. It's still under warranty but I have no idea how to deal with that in Canada. I'm going to shoot them an e-mail and see what's up. I was hoping it was an easy fix but alas!

Please let us know how this turns out, I realized i threw out my box when I first bought it online. Probably not the smartest idea, but just curious on how PC will handle this!

I bet it's mad at you for not giving it more love on speed 4! Sounds like it needs a new switch?

Haha, I actually have it a lot of love on speed 4. Maybe too much! It wants speed 6 only!

I sent an e-mail to Porter Cable/Dewalt, they replied today with a canned response about how to take it to my local repair store, so I guess that is what I will do. I doubt I will have time before winter, but I am out of warranty already so no biggy. In the meantime I have two GG 6"s now which I like a lot better anyway...so it's not a huge rush for me. I do kind of wish the PCs were built a little bit more solid.

Normally its the other way, people wishing the GG 6" was built more solid (ie: drop-proof) :).

Ya I can see how dropping the GG would be bad, but in terms of usage the GG has been much more reliable for me than PCs. Aside from the typical cord issues on the old PCs I've had two just decide to give up on me (including the one mentioned int his thread), whereas the GG's been going rock solid for...well, ever. Either way, I have two GGs now so I'm all good. I'll probably have this PC repaired then just keep it around in case.

I'd venture a guess that it's the rotary dial for the speed that's bad. If you're mechanically inclined it might not be to hard of a repair so you might try opening it up and looking at how hard it would be to replace the dial.

Here's a link to a post in another forum from someone with the same problem and how they fixed it. Sounds like a pretty easy job.

Nice sleuth work, thanks! I will give this a shot and report back.
