Hello, I am new to this forum with a question about the Porter Cable Orbit Polisher.



What is the difference between the PC7336 and the PC7424 ?

(or are they basically the same unit with different accessories?)



Which one is beter for detailing ?

Unless you buy the nice package from Coastal, you really want the 7336 only because it comes with the heavier weight. Did you try a search on this topic? I'm sure it must've come up many times. ;)
 
ragman- Welcome to Autopia and congrats on your PC purchase. I'm a big Griot's fan/longtime customer, but their polishes and waxes aren't too hot. The best thing about Griot's products are easy ordering and the foolproof #1-#2-#3-wax system. And the #3 is VERY mild. In fact none of them will do much for heavy swirls or scratches unless you spend a LOT of time on it. Griot's polishes are quite hard to remove after you finish PCing; you'll really need some Final Inspection QD and microfibers to get all the residue off easily. I've used them quite a bit and really recommend that you go with something else. Just WHAT will depend on how bad your imperfections are, but I'll bet you'd be MUCH happier with products from 3M, Meguiar's, Pro, etc.



For wax, you can DEFINITELY do better than Griot's stuff, even if it does win shows. The PC works fine for applying ANY wax or sealant, liquid or paste. Again, it depends what you're after-incredible looks, durability, ease of use, etc.

I have a new '03 Acura TL - dark blue - which, despite my best efforts seems to already be showing some light swirl marks. I also have a Volvo 850 GLT with close to 100 K miles on it but in excellent shape. Normally, I use a clay bar to prep the paint and then I wax with Meguiar's Gold Class.



So I guess that means I am kind of in the middle - between great looks and durabiltiy.



I guess I need to do some more reading on this sight.

ragman- Dark blue can be as challenging as black (or, IMO, even more so). On the Volvo, I used to do a Volvo 850 wagon. Be careful what you get on the black/dark gray plastic trim (if your GLT has it). Something like Blitz will NEVER come off of it! Look around the site and ask some more Q's. BTW, after the post on this thread, I posted elsewhere how Griot's polishes aren't all that bad! :p Even I can't make up my mind about them, but I still think you might as well try something like Perfect-It III or Meg #9 for your swirls. But if it's between ordering the Griot's polishes tonight or putting it off for a week, go ahead and get the Griot's.



How pleased are you with the Gold Class?
 
I think the Gold Class has been outstanding when applied by hand.



I'm hopeful that with the PC I'll be able to get even better results with a polish and wax that is specifically formulated for a polisher.



I will take your advice and look around the site some more. As it's about 10 degrees outside(here in Connecticut) I don't think that I'll be doing any detailing soon. But it makes me feel better thinking about getting my cars looking great again!



Do you have any favorite sites for purchasing the products you suggested?

ragman- I'm not sure if any wax is really MORE PC-friendly than any other, but it can sure be a "much faster hand". I apply EVERYTHING by machine, polishes, waxes, you name it. Opinions differ, but for me it's the way to go.



Besides, of course, Griot's, you should check out Top of the Line, MotorHead (haven't used them lately),CMA and YoSteve , who has great microfibers, and Microfiber tech (maybe Microfibertech.com, can't remember) whose Waffle weaves can't be beat. Those should at least get you started, and I've had nothing but good experiences with them all. If my links don't work, do a yahoo/etc. search, they're easy to find. Happy browsing!
