Porter Cable on shower doors?

I want to detail my shower door and shower with my PC but I'm looking for suggestions as to what to use. I tried some AIO with a yellow pad and it helped a little but didn't really get all the deposits and soap scum out even after a couple of applications.

What else should I try?

I'm surprised that AIO didn't remove the soap scum. I did my shower when we moved into our house, and AIO took care of about 3 years of soap scum in about 15 minutes!

Maybe you should try hitting it with a bit of vinegar and water, mixed 50/50.

Thanks, I forgot about the vinegar. It did seem to make a difference. I'm going to go over it with AIO once again tomorrow.

I think that now my wife might get hooked on the PC...:D

My wife has fallen in love my some of my MF's. I pull open a drawer in the kitchen and I see some of my glass MF's. I'm like how did these get in here? She's like "they work so good on the glass I didn't think you would mind".

Now I am trying to convince her that we need a steamer for around the house.

Well, for the cars too :)

BTW, I found that I have mineral deposits. What I did was I tried the vinegar with one of the green fiberglass type rubbing pads that you use to clean dishes and after some elbow grease it seems to be working well. It doesn't scratch the door and it's better that using my fingernails.

It's going to take some work to clean it up but at least I've got a plan now....

My wife also want to use the PC to clean the tiles in the master bath, she's going to get hooked. Now if I can only convince her to start detailing our cars. :D

I tried the PC w/ AIO, SSR2.5 and SSR3 and it didn't even touch the soap scum. I was disappointed to because the soap scum doesn't look that bad.

IMO, the cleaners we use for our paint aren't really suited for soap scum removal.

Soap scum is primarily conposed of free fatty acids. Therefore, you really want to use a base (i.e. ammonia) to dissolve the fatty acids so they can be rinsed away. If you use some of the slightly abrasive cleaners (VM or SSR1), IMO, you are only removing scum via mechanical action and it's probably gunking up your pad.

Chemical cleaners (like AIO) probably are not very basic so they won't do a good job either.

Upshot is that the PC with our detailing cleaners is probably not the best way to remove soap scum. Instead, make an ammonia solution of 0.5 cup ammonia to 1 gal. water. Spray on, scrub, and rinse.

I guess I should mention as well that in hard waterI( .e. water with high mineral content), soaps can also form insoluble salts. In this case, the best thing to use is a weak acid. White vinegar (full strength) is good at removing this.

The mothers chrome polish works wonders on those shower doors! PC at speed 4 + mothers chrome polish in a white sonus SFX spot pad take out almost ALL the mineral deposits.

I have a Kohler fiberglass Tub/surround with glass doors.

The Mr CLean Eraser is the go to product to clean the entire shower and doors with minimum effort. Fill the tub with warm water and any soapy cleaner and erase away. Never been so easy to eliminate the soap scum on the fiberglass and the glass doors. I did have a few scratches on the tub and walls so I used some DACP with the original unused PC pad with great results. Experimented with a few products on the glass doors and surround and have settled on Klasse AIO and a Carnuba Spray Detailer as a topper.

The initial effort was worth it as the doors/tub surround just shed the dirt so much easier that before. Of course I left the bottom of the tub untouched from the AIO/Wax just using the Eraser to clean it. YOu can see the line of dirt where the treated section begins, a visual testament to the AIO/Wax's abilities.

This is an extremely informative thread. I've always wondered what the best way to clean shower doors was, and now I know... keep sharing those tips!

My wife once made the comment "wish you would keep the bathroom as clean as those D**M cars". It was not a suggestion if you know what I mean. :) How does that saying go ? necessity is the mother of invention......Mom is now happy so "WE" are happy.

I can detail the cars with complete abandon.

If a bathroom was as easy to clean as a car, I'd be washing it all the time. The biggest pain with the bathroom is that it's INSIDE the house - meaning you can't just slosh water everyhwere.
