Porter Cable 7424 on a New Car? Other Misc Questions.

Hello All!

Hoping someone could help me with a few questions. I am contimplating purchasing the porter cable, but I am not exactly sure if I really need it considering I have a new car. If someone could help me with a few quick questions, that would be great!

1. Since I have a new car, will using my hands instead of a pc be suffice?

2. Will a PC make the appearance even more vibrant than if you did it by hand?

3. If I decide to use a PC, will I have to use different sealants/waxes than I already planned to use (see below my 'plan of attack')? Or can I use the below products with a PC?

'Plan of Attack' Procedure:

1st Step: Wash â€â€œ Duragloss Car Wash Shampoo (Butchers Foam Gun + Accumulator's 2 Bucket Method)

2nd Step: Clay â€â€œ Clay Magic

3rd Step: Wash â€â€œ Duragloss Car Wash Shampoo (Butchers Foam Gun + 2 Bucket Method)

4th Step: Wax â€â€œ Klasse AIO

5th Step: Sealant â€â€œ Z2 Pro (with ZFX for first coat; without ZFX for additional coats, if necessary)

Washing/Drying Materials:

Mitts - ExcelDetail Mitts (5oz+ mitts)

Drying â€â€œ WW MF Towel(s) from PakShak and ExcelDetail

Sealant/Wax Application/Removal - Ultra MF Towels from PakShak

1.- New or not, it's all a matter of what condition the paint is in. I've seen brand new Porsches that would require a rotary to fix! I note you don't plan to do any marring removal though, so if it doesn't have any marring you'll be OK by hand. If it *does* have marring, most people will do better by PC.

2.- Depends. The PC will go over the panel at a lot of orbits-per-minute and your hand probably won't do as much. Might not matter though. ScottWax did incredible work before he got a PC. "More vibrant", if I had to guess I'd say probably not. Just try to be thorough and you should be OK.

3.- AIO works great by PC. Most people find SG a lot easier to get thin (the whole "trick" to using it successfully) when they work by hand and I'd guess that the Zaino would be the same way (I have no first-hand experience with Zaino).

I know there are a lot of qualifications ("it depends..", "probably", etc.) in the above but it really is hard to say and I don't want to steer you wrong. Generally, stuff that works by hand works by PC and vice-versa. Generally, most people aren't as indefatigable as a PC. But it's not like you *need* a PC to keep a new car nice. But if you can swing the cost I'd get one.

IMO

I think you'll find using the PC to help you in your detail will not only make your results that much nicer but you won't be tired when your finished.

AOI with the PC is fine , I dont use Zaino but I believe they don't suggest you use it to apply sealants do to product wasting.

A tip for you one claying , if you clay while your washing the car you can skip the second washing step . Thats totally up to you . Good luck

Thanks, guys! Really appreciate the info/advice!! (Accumulator, big thanks to you. Your posts through-out this forum have been a big help).

Question for Accumulator: Instead of starting a new thread about this, maybe you could answer it here. I got me one of those butchers foam guns, however, I am a little unsure as to what I should put inside the soap jug. Should I put a mixture of car shampoo and water in there? Hoping you can help!

Back to my original post, though. So if I were to get a PC, I would only use it for waxes (in my case, AIO)? I wouldnt use it for anything else?

Great post Genesis. I was going to post the exact same question myself. I too have a new car with little scratching, damage, marring, etc. I didn't know if it was safe to use a pc on my paint.

Can I apply AIO by hand or is it better with the PC? Thanks all.

you can also use your PC for polishing, in addition to applying sealants/waxes. you can even get MF bonnets and use your PC to remove products. personally i found it to be too cumbersome using a MF bonnet and the PC to remove products. i find trying to get the bonnet on and centered to be quite difficult and not worth my time. but it may work for you.

and yes, you can apply AIO by hand.

I apply Zanio with a PC as its easier to obtain an even consistant pressure, which results (for me anyway) in a super thin product application.

FWIW- Sal Zaino cited an 11-inch foam pad and suggested not using a machine application as it would absorb as much Zaino as would be required for an average vehicle. I don't know of many detailers who use a foam pad of that size but I don't doubt that it may well be true.
