Porsche & Mercecdes details

I've been asked to detail the following.

2001 Merceces ML270 CDi in metallic red

2002 Porsche 996 C4S in non metallic black

Neither has any major paint faults. The Merc was previously cleaned by a detailer weekly but he damaged it whilst parking and then turned out to have no insurance (ouch!), oh, and it's GF's boss's car too.

The 996 belongs to a client of mine in my day job. Real garage queen and lives in a centrally heated garage.

The Merc doesn't phase me - it's just big compared with my regular car, but the 996, well, I guess it's because it's a £65,000 car I'm a little nervous. I have the right equipment, I know I have the right skill but do you pro guys have any hints for black cars?

Sorry if this is a little vague but client has said the car is very clean but he's had some problems with dealers swirling it so I'm sure the PC's going to get used.

I detailed an '02 C4S in Lapis Blue just last week. I didn't run into any problems. It was just like detailing most any other car.

Porsche paint is maybe a little softer than other brands but it polishes up very nicely. On the 996 I detailed I only used a PC as there was no need for a rotary. You can use a polish with a bit of bite to remove the deeper swirls, then follow up with a milder polish to bring out the max gloss. Top it with whatever you want. I'm sure it will look stunning; most Porsches do when detailed.

LMK if I can offer more help. I'll post a few pics here after I upload them.

Bret-nice job on the Porsche!

You know the rules though, what products did you use? ;)

On the Porsche I used Einszett Paint Polish (aka green can), PC, and a stiff orange pad. The polish was a nightmare to work with as it was a cold day (27F when I got to the customers house, never broke 40F). Apparently Einszett polishes don't like cold paint. Followed up with NXTx2, PC, Meguiars yellow pad per Mike P directions.

Mothers Clearcoat wheel polish, Zaino Z16 on tires, Zaino leather twins on interior, Mothers aluminum polish on tips, Hi Temp trim dressing on black trim.

The pics aren't very good. I forgot my camera like a dummy and used the customer's but I didn't really know how to use it properly. I took about 15 pics and these are the 3 best. This is the same customer who owns the sterling silver M5 in my gallery.

Bret-I hear ya' on the cold temps. After some nice 70 degree days in mid January, we've been stuck in the 30s and 40s for highs (a few 50-60 degree days) and it is miserable to detail when it is like that.

Thanks for the information!

Just tried Menzerna on the Porka last weekend (just experimented on the bonnet or hood depending on where u come from) Didn't find the IP too harsh, then swapped to FP & finished with CMW. Looks very nice. Used the Megs yellow polishing pad. (Just got some Orange pads from DavidB)

I think I'm right in saying that the Menzerna are recommended for German cars.

Although the black 996 is non-metallic it probably has a clear coat.
