Porboy's Ex Review

This morning I tried Poorboy’ EX and here are my initial impressions.

I did not use any polish prior to EX because I currently have Klasse AIO and 3 layers of SG topped with P21S, which I used about 5 weeks ago instead of my usual Pinnacle Paste Glaz which is my favorite topper for my silver Passat.

As previously posted, the EX is thick! The smell is really nice, almost smells like Paste Glaz, pina colada scent. I used a Meguiars foam applicator dry and applied the EX. Since it is so thick, it was difficult to get a thin layer on the foam applicator, it did not flow and cover the whole pad. I find Paste Glaz, P21S and Klasse SG easier to get a uniform amount on a foam pad. I applied the EX to the car on the cool, just washed and dried paint. Applying an even layer was difficult. When I put a dime size of EX on the pad, it did not spread very well so parts of the car had thicker yellow EX applied. I did the entire car (inside my garage, no sun) and then removed the EX with a MF cloth. It was fairly easy to remove but the thicker sections took some pressure applied to the MF to come off. Overall, Paste Glaz and P21S were easier to remove(mainly because they were easier to apply in a thin layer). Maybe I should have misted my foam applicator with some QD to thin out the EX, I will try that next time. After removing 95% of the EX, (I used 2 MF towels), I did a final buff to remove any EX that was still in small corners, etc. using Platinum Gloss Enhancer (a free sample) that I had left over. I have to admit, the PGE, made it easier to remove the EX. I would recommend using a QD sparingly to remove the EX- maybe even a little on the foam applicator to thin the EX out a bit.

I pulled the car out to see how it looks in the sun. It looks excellent (maybe that’s what EX stands for!), like a carnauba, similar to P21S on the silver paint but does not have that POP that Paste Glaz gives to the silver paint. It feels smooth as well. I will report back after seeing how it holds up. Overall, if it were easier to get an even, thin coat, I would have been more impressed. If EX lasts longer than P21S or PPG, it may be my new favorite topper! I just need to experiment with the best application methods. Stay tuned

You should use a damp aplicator with EX. It makes a huge difference on ease of aplication and spread of product.

About removing it, how long did you wait? it buffs off easy if you wait at least 30 minutes.

rad21,

Try using a sponge from the inside of a terry applicator. This small-cell type of sponge really aids in applying a thin even coat for products like Poorboy's EX and SuperShine's PowerShine which are very thick in nature. When I was testing both products this type of sponge was the best method, requiring less application pressure, product and effort of removal.

Thanks for the feedback. A couple of things I will do next time:

I will try a damp applicator and a small cell type sponge. I don't think I left it on for 30 minutes- I applied it to the entire vehicle and then began to remove it. I read the instructions on the back but I remember Steve saying he was changing the lable instructions. Now I know what to try next time:bigups

Yes , we have found a damp mf sponge (which will come with the EX) to be the best applicator...we have also heard that the 30 minutes to an hour will give the best look and still easy removal, if working in the sun, that might be a bit too long...one panel at a time would be more preferable...

Compatablitity with every product is our goal so you can achieve the look YOU are happy with....

thanks everyone...:wavey

.The use of a mf pad (like those used for klasse) misted lightly with a qd (like FI) will help help spread EX easier.

I have had good luck in removing any EX dry residue that may be hard to buff off if left too long by applying a small mist of qd;) .

I am currently applying EX over klasse (and will be giving my feedback soon):up .

Just had to check it out.........:D

I.m appying over PUPP.I only done the rear quarter, A pillar & half the roof. I applied it with my PC & grey pad (dry). It went on smooth & even. It sat for 30min. Came off easy with a MF. In the moring I'll do the whole car.

Steve.......so far so good........:xyxthumbs

Have been using a damp Meguiars foam pad to apply the EX with success. Haven`t tried or heard of the cell type sponges you mention. If this works better and applies a thinner and even coat would like to try it. Can these be purchased spearately and if so where. Thans!

I removed the inner sponge from a terry-type applicator( old Zaino terry applicator and the ones one can buy at AutoZone, PepBoys, etc.). These are the only sources I have found for paint-safe small-cell sponges.:wavey

I found that applying EX with a moist microfiber applicator, (moistened with filtered water), made applying EX pretty easy. It is thick but the damp applicator really helped in making the EX easier to apply. I spritzed the mf applicator every 1-2 panels to keep it moist but not wet.

I found that leaving it on 30 min to an hour made removal about as easy as removing

P21S or Souveran wax! :bounce :bow

To me, on my jet black paint, EX looks like a combination of: AIO & Platinum, mixed with the carnauba qualities of P21S. I have only tried it on a dark color so far but it seems like it would work well on any color.

Today I tried EX on my wife's white Accord. I used a damp, microfiber sponge applicator. You guys were right- it was much easier to apply evenly and after waiting 45 minutes, the EX came off easier than P21S and Pinnacle Paste Glaz and I only needed to use 1 MF towel! The car looks great, there was no staining of trim and almost no dust during removal. I agree that it looks like a combo of Klasse and P21S. It has a real high gloss with depth of a carnauba. If EX's durability exceeds 60 days, Poorboy has a winner here. :up

I noticed that EX has a consistency similar to Wet Wax (same color, thickness and ease of application/removal), which I got as a freebee with my Clay Magic bar, however Wet Wax smells like solvent and is only a liquid carnauba not a hybrid like EX.

I applied the first coat with a PC and that worked great. Easy to get a fairly thin and even coat.

The second coat I used a moist mf towel and that was more difficult to apply evenly but it worked fine and wiped off pretty easily.

Working in the sun made no difference.

Steve just sent me a Poorboy applicator so I'll try that slightly moistened next time.

The Spray and Wipe is fantastic!. My truck was driven in or just sat out in the rain most of the last 4 days so it got wet and dried several times. Today I went out and used the Spray and Wipe and all the water spots dissappeared immediately and the shine was like new. It's so easy and quick and completely thorough that I always have it with me.

I also used the MF waffle weave towel from the Autopia store for the first time this weekend and it worked very nicely with the Spray and Wipe. I like the larger than normal MF towel size. I don't think I'll be using it to dry the truck as it would take too many of them to do a full size ext cab with a tonneau but it appears from these first experiences I've had that these will be a good multi-function towel to have with me in the truck. I like the almost ugly gray color. The waffle weaves from Pakshak are so darned purty that I have a problem getting myself to get them dirty.....like when doing a Spray and Wipe job. These gray ones I don't mind getting dirty using one for the tip half and another for the lower half and finishing up with the chrome wheels. I just hate getting Ranney's dirty!

EX sounds almost too good to be true - much like Moose Wax did in the beginning.

I hope that the honeymoon lasts for a while. This time I'm not going to rush in like I did with MW and then find that the product was flawed (at least according the the later reviews)

There are many leaders ( explorers ) here at Autopia. Many are willing to try new products and techniques. I would find it quite boring to just wait until everyone else has tested a product before I tried it out. Needless to say I rather lead than follow.

blkZ28Conv,

I totally agree with you! Trying out new stuff is at least 1/2 the fun of it! :D

I must say, even after the first time using EX, and even the areas that I applied the product way to thick, after letting it dry for 30 min to 1 hr., it was very easy to remove and left not hazing or downside at all.

Again, I found out in using the product 3 times, that keeping the applicator moist with filtered water, (I used a mf applicator), made the application and removal about as easy as removing P21S or Souveran wax! :bow :bow

AMP99,

I took your idea this weekend when I applied EX. I used a mf pad moisted with water and the application was easy:up !! I was able to spread EX over three sections at a time (I also had great success using a moistened foam pad to spread EX, actually I was able to spread the product over the entire car faster). I had been using FI qd to mist the pads but imo the water idea is showing better ease of application.

I too like trying to experiment with new products, how do you think we all at autopia learn what to "follow" as the "best"/effecient methods;) .
