Pontiac G8 One Step

My friend bought a new Pontiac G8 a year or so ago, and I detailed it when he took delivery then (major dealer installed holograms, buffer trails, DISO, you name it). It's been a while and its taken some fairly serious abuse from daily driving, tunnel washes to keep the salt off during the winter, wife, kids, etc. Both of us are very busy and have been trying to schedule some time to do a full correction, but we finally got a free afternoon and figured that a quick clean up, one step correction and seal would have to do. I apologize again for the lack of during pics, or really very detailed before pics but it's been overcast most of the day and I was having a hard time getting decent pictures, and the time constraint didn't help. Overall it was very swirled with a LOT of RIDS, and a few really nasty scuffs that we were able to minimize at least. After stripping the paint you could really see in person how gray it looked. Rasky suggested to me trying an LC 5.5" orange pad with 205 and it did take care of all the swirls, and minimized most of the rids. There were a few nasty spots that I busted out the D300 and 3" mf pads on as well. I'd say MAYBE 65% correction, but for a one step we were both fairly pleased. Process was:

- Wheels got Griots Garage wheel cleaner (falling out of love with this stuff quickly)

- Tires cleaned with OPC 3:1 and dressed with Optimum Tire Shine

- Foamed with CG Citrus Wash via Gilmour Foamaster II

- Washed via 2bm with CGCW

- M205 on LC Orange pad via GGDA

- Spot compounding with D300/3"MF via PC7424

- Blackfire on lc Blue pad via PC7424

- Glass got SIG w/short nap glass towel

Condition Before:

While we were at it we debadged it except for the Pontiac emblem on the back, and put on the Holden 6.0 V8 side emblems. I'm not usually into debadged cars but I think the G8 looks nice without all the extra crap on the back.

Here are afters, not much sun but for a one step he was very pleased with it, and I was fairly pleased (hey, the autopian in me can't ignore RIDS).

Got another (I'm guessing) one step that I'm going to try the same combo with tomorrow, I"ll post up the results of that as well. Thanks for looking.

Excellent. The car went from grey to deep black! Nice ride.

Thanks! I'd really like to take a couple days and do a 2-3 step on it, but honestly before winter I'm not sure it would pay. I'll probably grab it next spring, buff it out and do an application of opti-coat as well.

I love the G8s. As sad as it was to see Pontiac close up shop, they couldn't have picked a better car to go out on. Even if it is Australian! Great work keeping that thing looking its best.

Thanks guys. I do really like the G8 quite a bit. The paint on them is super strange though. Not real bad to correct (doesn't really feel like the typical hard GM clear) but it chips like CRAZY. Apparently there are quite a few threads over on the G8 forums about how bad the paint is about chipping off. My friend had a lot of really good sized chips in it, and had a local body shop do some color sanding. They did a fair job I guess, but I think that we could have probably got the same results with the langka system if nothing else.

Looking good Justin!

Hey! Wasn't I supposed to do that car?

Looks like no more helping you out! :nomore:

LMAO! Only kidding bro! :tongue2:

That's a nice one step! Real nice depth and gloss. Bfwd is just a beast as a lsp.

Thanks, I was really impressed what 205 and an orange LC pad could do. It's definitely not the typical gm clear, pretty soft stuff on this one at least. And I do love BWFD, that stuff is easily my favorite (non coating) LSP. I'd like to try Powerlock as well, but I can't imagine it being any better honestly.

Awesome job! The G8 is an awesome car. I think my wife and I are getting one for her *0th birthday!

The Optimum Tire Gel might be a hair to matte for me,or is it just because the car is in the shade.

I'm doing a Panther Black one tomorrow for a guy taking it to the GONE event in Iowa. Love the G8-ts|s Custom Emblems makes a lot of aftermarket dress-up stuff for them, here's our sponsored GT:

Not to "threadjack" but here is guy who understands that a "Happy wife" is a "Happy life" by NOT posting the first number of her impending birthday(Commonsense displayed as she will probably never read anything on a guy's detailing site............but why take a chance lol).

The G8 is a great car, the 6.2 motor in the last production year is the poo, and with a few mods puts it in "Corvette" performance category "With the quickness" pardon the pun.
