polishing regularity and clear-coat safety?

how safe is it to constantly polish the caR? its seems that lots of guys polish everytime they wax, but isn't that bad for the clear coat?

I wonder because i recently had my car detailed, but becasue i park outside, i need to do some touch ups, but i'm worried about polishing too much.

any idea?

Depends. I would imagine a high speed with a cutting pad might remove paint if you polish every month for a few years. By hand I doubt that it would make a considerable difference.

In my case my car has been heavily compounded with a high speed about 3 times a year for the past 3 years. I have not seen any paint on my pads yet. THe trick is to measure the paint every now and then to determine how much clear is left. Better safe than sorry.

I asked the same question not too long.

Basically it depends on what abrassiveness polish you're using.

If you're using a GEPC, IHG, #7, those are mostly oils and fillers and not really cutting into your clear coat. From what I can gather, these are safe to use more commonly, say quarterly maybe even every couple months if you feel the need. But I guess the purist will say that if you're protecting the car correctly with wax/sealant, you shouldn't need to do it that often.

I think a SMR or getting higher up on the abrassive scale probably shouldn't be used as frequently. And then if you start applying with more aggressive pads, you might need to be more careful as well.

All in all, I'm pretty fanatical about keeping my black car shining. So I see myself using GPEC every few months and probably using a DACP or SMR maybe twice a year.
