Polishing Auto-Dimming Sideview Mirrors

I have a 2002 Audi A4 which has "automatic-dimming outside mirrors" and a heated defog fuction according to Audi. I have some water-spots on the mirrors that are not removable with normal glass cleaners/vinegar. Would it be safe to polish these with the PC and something like Autoglym's Glass Polish? I'm not sure if these types of mirrors have some type of coating on the glass. Would using a more aggressive polish possibly damage the auto-dimming function?

I'm just guessing, but I would have to think the auto-dimming layer is an LCD layer that is between the glass and the reflective surface, so I would think you would be fine polishing the outer (glass) surface. However, that's just a guess that I wouldn't trust your mirrors to!

Are they glass or are they plastic?

The mirrors surfaces appear to be glass, but they have a constant, darkish blue tint. It is not like my inside rearview mirror which is also eletrochromic. The inside mirror looks like a normal mirror (not tinted) until the sensors darken it for glare. I will try to get a pic posted tonight if that might help. :nixweiss

take a business card or something like it and but the short side to the mirror, the distance between the actual card and reflected image is the thickness of the actual mirror, i would have to think its gotta be at least a quarter inch, if so, you should have no ill effects to polishing the actual glass
