Polished Bliss: One very swirly BMW M3!

Well, another day and another detail, on this M3, for a full paint correction:

I'll skip the wash process as i'm pretty tired tonight and i'm sure most of you are familiar with our process anyways :)

So onto the paint correction....

The car was reading a healthy amount of paint all round (90-120 on average) and the only panel which appeared to have been re-sprayed was the offside front wing, which was handy as i was going to need a decent amount of paint to play with to remove as much defects as i could:

The paint work was pretty much fecked! Ruth and her boyfriend were over from Ireland and popped in past for a chat - they will vouch for just how bad the paint was as the pics dont show the half of it, the car had car wash bristles stuck in the vents and the owner had admitted to previously using a brush on the car etc..

I initially started out with Menzerna IP 3.02 with the rotary but the lubricants in the polish were playing up a wee bit which gave the odd buffer hop and resulted in the panels getting pretty damn hot, so i changed over to a different polish i've been playing with for the last few weeks - 3M's Perfect-it III Machine Polish. This was worked at 1700rpm's with moderate pressure to begin with for the first few passes and then i eased up on the pressure for the remaining passes, most panels received 2 hits but the defect removal was pretty impressive - much more than i was initially expecting:

50/50 shot of the bonnet:

A few random scratches remained but all in all, it was a big improvement :)

The bootlid was also pretty bad:

Again, with the 3M Polish this was the result after 2 hits:

Once the polishing step was complete, i set about applying the Blackfire Wet Diamond Paint Sealant followed by the Blackfire Ivory Carnauba Wax, this was the LSP choice of the owner as he wanted something nice and easy to apply and maintain - it also meant a nice easy last hour for me compared to the usual longer Zymol Process :)

While i did that, Rich then appeared to lend a hand, so he sealed the wheels with PB Wheel Sealant, dressed the tyres with Blackfire Long Lasting Tyre Gel and did a complete Interior Detail which consisted of Zymol Treat for the leather, Vinyl for the trim and HD Cleanse for the glass inside and out.

The arches were dressed straight after the wash process with Megs All Season Dressing as this ensures a "run free" finish by the time the detail is finished.

Rich also spent around 30 mins on the Tail pipes as they had stubborn marks on them:

After:

A combination of Blackire Fine Cut Metal Polish, Megs NXT Polish and a German Applicator Pad were used on the pipes :)

Most of the after pics are in side unfortunately as the rain started to come on but we got one or 2 outside

I was very pleased with this one, due to the level of defect removal exceeding my initial expectations :)

Thanks for looking :thumb:

Amazing work! Those were some nasty swirls on that m3. Guess I gotta give 3m perfect it more thought for my next details!

cupra_clark- [Insert usual :bow regarding the caliber of work here ;) ]

What part number is the PI-III Machine Polish? I'm a big fan of the (discontinued in USA) PI-III line and most of the line is far too mild for efficient correction on my E36 M3. I'm wondering if the clear on this one was that much softer or if the "Machine Polish" is a PI-III product with which I'm not familiar (maybe they use different names in different markets). Only two passes at 1700, huh....

Great job. I love 3M PI III Machine Glaze, but I find its not that aggressive with a PC. I need to go to Fine Cut for real swirl removal. Do you find it rather aggressive with a rotary? Would you ever see yourself having to go to Fine Cut with the rotary?

That is the best looking bmw paint I have seen yet :bow :bow :bow

And believe me I've seen a few.

Simply stunning results. What camera are you using again????

Please don't tell me that it is a $200 P&S :wall :wall:wall

The afters are astonishing, even from far away you can see the depth and reflection in the paint. Stunning!

What code is this polish?

Here in Europe, the Ultrafina is 50383. I don't know if 06060 will be 09374 and 06062 will be 09375.

Help us cupra_clark !! ;)

tdekany- Those are PI-3000 products, I think he (being across the pond) used PI-III stuff.

maesal- Hm...those numbers don't register with me

Guess this might remain a mystery until curpa clark responds...

I started with the compound on the right. It was recommended to me by a custom motorcyle paint artist. Last time I went to the automotive paint supply house for more, they told me the original formula was discontinued, something to do with compliance issues. DOT, OSHA, whatever the case, it was replaced by the compound pictured on the right, Perfet-It 3000. I love the job it does. My PC with a lake country orange and all the bad stuff goes away. It's just a matter of how you step down to finish the job. I like Meguiars swirl remover. I don't have much experience with any other compunds yet.
