Polish Scratched Pillars? What are they coated with.

On say a Volvo, the vertical trim between the windows. Or a Mercedes SUV, the trim on either side of the rear hatch. They are not mat or textured, but finished somehow (I'm looking at my computer monitor now) just like the plastic bezel that surrounds the screen.

I've seen, for instance, where that trim on a late model MB SUV has failed; in that it was peeling a clear plastic like coating.

But to my question. Can you polish out scratches on these pieces? PlastX? Menz?

Most of those are painted even if they look very oxidized. Here are the pillars I just finished up on an '06 Dodge Magnum that rarely if ever saw any wax or tlc prior to my detailing it for a friend before he put it up for sale.

I used M101 on a black wool pad with my Porter Cable and finished with Speed on a foam polishing pad. Pardon the compound residue everywhere. This was mid correction.

50/50 shot for the heck of it after one set of M101 on a black wool pad:

These are iPhone pics so I apologize for the quality.

They are called belt and scalp moldings and most of the time can be polished. Either by hand or mini-buffer.

Interesting. I guess everything's got to have a name. Because of seeing that peeling on another customers MB SUV, I just didn't have the nerve to get to aggressive; thinking I might burn thru.

Thanks chrisguga.

These aren't oxidized, just scratched. And from what I've read, M101 is a superior product. But like I said in the above post, I was concerned about burning thru. Maybe what I saw on the other MB was the clear coat peeling? Didn't know they were painted.
