Polish Question.

Hi Guys!

First of all, its a great web site with a lot of helpful and very interesting information and posts.

Hopefully, Iam gonna receive my PC 7424 next monday from e-bay.

So, I have all staff ready to detail my car, except polish. I need yours advice about what polish to get....I wanna start something from over-the-counter, like Mothers PowerPolish,

3M Shine restorer (wal-mart) or Meguiar's Show Car Glaze....

Which one is the best?

My ride is 2004 Honda Accord (desert mist)

:thx

Can't speak from first-hand experience, but people seemed to really like the Power Polish for a while. I'd search on it...there haven't been any posts on it recently but there *is* info out there about it.

The Meg's #7 is *not* what you want, it's nonabrasive. Dunno about the 3M Shine Restorer but I'd pass as there are only a few 3M products (see below) that I'd recommend.

Note that your local autobody/paint supply place might greatly expand your definition of OTC ;) And they can order stuff like Meg's #80, which *is* a good choice. If they have 3M PI-III Machine Glaze pn 05937 I'd buy that, but don't let them talk you into a different 3M product by saying "it's just like that" ('cause it won't be, the 05937 is one of those "ringers", an unusually good product).

If you're learning how to polish properly I would definitely start with 3M products. I would remove scratches with 3M Finesse It II, and then remove swirls with Foam Pad Machine Polish. The reason I would do this is because products work fantastic, and they don't have any silicone in them. Pretty much anything from Meguiar's is loaded with silicone, which gives a nice shine, but wash your car a couple of times, and swirls come back. If you're using a non-silicone swirl remover, you're actually removing the swirls. If you're using a swirl remover with silicone in it, you're just covering them up, not removing them. 3M makes professional products, and Meguiar's doesn't.

Mikhail,

Just don't accept the part-BS metro said. He doesn't have a clue about the role of silicones in car care products, which type of silicones are harmful, which are not or what fillers are, etc., etc.

The Meguiar's comment is simply not true (especially not when you consider the pro line from them). Some of the "trade secret" oils in Megs polishes *can* and *will* do a slight filling action but the abrasive package in them is high-tech and effective. However, 3M products are LOADED with concealing active ingredients which are lying more to you - and your remaining imperfections will reappear.

If you want to start woth an OTC product, then the Mothers choice is excellent, but remember it has a thinner consistency than other, "typical" creamy liquids and it needs to be shaken before AND during application. You can tune its cutting power with your pads, but keep shaking it.

If you want some more user friendly product, I definitely recommend the Optimum polishes. No dusting, non-filling honest formulas, and because of their near endless working time, they are super safe for beginners.

The Desert Mist is a forgiving color, but this light gold/beige/silver can look wonderful if you use the right techniques and products on it.

Thanks everybody for quick reply.

One more question: I have bottle of megs. ColorX...how to use it properly? I mean is it a polish, wax or combination?

it's a polish/wax combo (you need to work it in and let it dry). probably my fave megs product....

How you usually apply Color X, by hand or via pc?

i've applied it by pc with excellent results. leaves a slick finish and i've gotten a months durability with no probs. try topping it with whatever lsp you'd like for even better durability..
