Please help me pick my UDM LC CCS pads!

I need to pick up pads for my new UDM and I'm going to go with Danase's Lake Country CCS Pads. Problem is that I'm new at detailing and have no idea which 6 to pick (doing the 'buffet-style' 6 pack for $40).

I'm planning to use 1Z Paint Polish, possibly 1Z Extra, Natty's Paste Wax (Blue), and possibly Duragloss AW (which is still questionable at this point).

I have swirl marks on the paint, and a few areas with medium-to-light scratches that I need to work out.

Opinions please? My car is a Scion tC which I understand has poor quality paint to start with - not sure if that's true though.

Yellow - most aggressive, use for cutting

Orange - Second most aggressive, light cutting, finishes down well considering its aggressiveness

Green - Third most aggressive, heavy polishing

White - Fourth most aggressive, use it for finishing and light Swirl mark removal or all in ones

Black/Grey - Fifth most aggressive, use it for glaze application or waxes/sealants and all in ones

Blue - least aggressive, use it for wax and sealant application

tCspool,

I am in a similar situation as you. I haven't run my process yet as my stuff is still rolling in (just got my pads this weekend). I choose to go with 4" CCS pads. I picked up 4 Green, 4 White, and 3 Black (though in retrospect I wish I went with a 6" pad here. But I want to try waxing with a 4" pad and a 6" pad and see what I like the best).

I am also going the 1Z polish route (Big thanks go to Accumulator and the forum search capability). I am going to start out with PP on a green pad then, MP w/W on a white pad and finish with Collinite No. 845 on a black pad.

Again I haven't done this yet, but this is my plan. based off the results I will adjust as needed. I want to document it (before, during and after picture and post the results and ask for feedback). At this time I would rather go to a more aggressive polish then a more aggressive pad since I am learning.

shorey -

Good luck with it - Accumulator and the rest of the gang have been great at answering my numerous questions! I'm planning to document as well and hope everything comes out perfect. Make sure you post up when you are done.

Oh ya - why didn't you pick up a blue pad - is there not a need for your application?

I do have a question about the more aggressive pads (yellow and orange). Since my scratches are light to medium, would the yellow be too aggressive and is it worth getting?

Also, for a newer car such as mine - what is pad I'll use for most of my work - white?

I am trying to keep my process simple and keep the amount of stuff I need to learn to use and buy down at this time. The black pad has no cut and was what I was suggested and research said would be good for laying down my LSP. Thus I went with the black pad. I have a Subaru which is a soft and thin paint so I didn't want to get too aggressive with a yellow or orange pad. Again the results will tell me what I need to do. Do I need to get more aggressive and by how much will all be learned after I do my first detail.

Until I have results, 2 polishes, 1 wax and 3 different pads seem to be a great place to build from.

Good - you can be the test subject with the Subaru - my tC has soft/thin paint as well. Hope you are planning to do this soon :waxing:

Currently I am waiting for two factors to align. A good day to do this outside and long block away from my 3 year old son. I hope to get this done in the next few weeks. I think I got everything in now... just need to find the weather and time (I am guessing this is the hardest part since I don't have a usable garage).

Why are people suggesting orange or yellow pads? I've been under the impression that most experts do not recommend using cutting pads of any kind on a UDM/PC, otherwise you get far too much micromarring.

That's what I am worried about! Although I do have scratches I want to get rid of, I'm thinking yellow/orange will be too abrasive for my amateur hands.

Time is ticking w/fall around the corner. I had to use defrost on my window this morning, very sad.
