Are you sure it was an SOS pad? I say this because of the amateur I am about the time I found this site was when I was looking for a solution on how to clean dried bug splats off the front of me car. I had read about bug sponges and bought one at a local store, American made even, foam inside with a cover on it like a bag that onions come in from the grocery store. Well since it felt soft I hosed half the bumper down with bug cleaner and went to scrubbing, wished I had done a test spot, but glad I only did half the bumper. When I was done with half the bumper it looked like your picture above. Well the sponge lays somewhere in the garage. Luckily I know how to polish out scratches from the previous experience. Spent an extra half hour polishing out that half of the bumper. Live and learn. Now the only thing that touches the bugs is the bug and tar remover, let soak for 5 minutes while washing other parts of the car then wash the bugs and rinse.

Dean! :wall

I did similar 30 years ago, on a 1980 Jeep Cherokee. It was about a year old, had just come back from the countryside for a weekend getaway, vehicle, and windshield was loaded with bugs, was having a hell of a time getting them off the glass, so out came a new coarse Scotchbrite Scrub Pad.

Wow, that was super easy, the bugs came right off lickety split! LOL

Yep, until I pulled the Jeep out of the Garage and hit sunlight, I hadn't realized the damage I had done! Like I sanded the glass with 150 grit paper. Ruined!

The following week I was having a new windshied put in. Wasn't too bad, only set me back about $225.

Lucky, that I wasn't even more stupid than I was, and did the rest of the glass! Live and learn! Mark

Had a girlfriend ( back in 80's ) who use a few of them on her's Olds and I spent the weekend correcting that car for her. Remember this was before all this great products we all have now for correction work.:wall

My niece called me a few months ago and asked how she might remove yellow paint from her husband's truck........They had been painting fire hydrants for a service project and spilled the paint on their truck. I gave her a few ideas, which she complete ignored and used an SOS pad. Same result. I didn't want to touch the truck because the damaged surface was one of the worst re-paints I have seen and the clear is way too thin to work with. They have since moved so I have not seen the truck lately, but my point is....it cracks my up that people come up with these ideas for cleaning their cars. I am sure I could have removed her paint stains but in fairness to me, they didn't ask......

I dated a girl who did the same on her VW. The paint was so hard that even after 2 passes of M105/wool there was still tracers. I just let it go.

There were still some on this car. Really hard paint I made so many pass's and even had to sand a lot of it to get it to about 85%. There was still a couple places you could see it where it looked like it dented in the clear a little

First the car... Until I realized she permanently damaged a brand new GTI... then I had to let her go as well... (seriously)
