Platinum UPP questions - -

Have any of you done any experimenting with Platinum? Different application/removal techniques, mixing with another product, things like that. If you have, I’d sure like to hear about what you’ve tried - what works for you, and what doesn’t work for you.

In early March I played with PUPP-C and PUPP for a few days and decided that it suited my needs, but I didn’t do a great deal of experimenting with different methods and techniques. For the past few weeks I’ve been redoing my roadster a section at a time; polishing, adding 3-4 layers of PUPP or Zaino, and then topping with carnauba. Great results!

I’ve been (and still am) in a doing mode rather than an experimenting mode. About all that I’ve learned about PUPP is that I like it, it should be applied in thin layers, I need to wait for about an hour before removing, I get the best results when I wait until the next day to add another layer, and that PUPP takes a topping of carnauba very nicely.

Any and all tips, tricks, etc. will be greatly appreciated!

Well, I have been using it quite a bit, and can impart my experience, but not too many tips, since I am still learning with it.

1) AIO+SG+PUPP - excellent combination. On a garaged car, 2 months, later, still strong beading, and excellent shine

2) AIO+PUPP - same results as above.

Application:

I have tried removing after 10, 20, 30 and 60 minutes. I have found that depending on temp and humidity, anywhere after 30 minutes is sufficient. I had an occasion where I had trouble (see my other post about Platinum) with removal on helmets after 20 mintues, but I think it was a combination of 2 things. Using cotton towels for removal, and too much product.

I tried the same thing on my motorcycle yesterday, and in 20 minutes, with really thin coats, removal with an MF was a breeze.

So in summary, I think thin coats, a minimum of 30 minutes drying time, and MF for removal is the ticket.

As for durability, so far PUPP has been just as durable as SG (7 weeks and counting). But that is on garaged car.

I am going to try Platinum on my other car, which is outside 24/7 (one car garage :( ) and see how it compares to the SG panels.

I've also tested it in the AIO+UPP combo, AIO+SG+SG, Menzerna Sealant Wax + UPP, prep done by Menzerna Final Polish, PUPC, etc. I also tried topping it with P21S CW and/or EX.

On a clear color car I'd AIO+UPP and add another UPP coat each 2 or 3 weeks. On dark colors, I'd top 3 coats of UPP w/ carnauba wax or EX.

I use both the PUPC and AIO before depending on the cleaning needs. If this surface is perfect I go with the PUPC which is very smooth. I have found that UPP looks better after one day and slightly better with additional layers up to 3 after that I couldn't tell. For me I don't notice much difference at all layering S100 over it, but I did get some spectacular results topping it with EX. Added some depth that S100 didn't. For applications I use the same method that NickT uses very easy. I am going to try a VM UPP combo pretty soon, seems like it could be a perfect match.

PUPC, VM, PUPP, S100......no diff putting on the S100.....

Ive done the same with BF II with similiar results....

Not a lot of different mixes with UPP but what I have tried worked well. The standard AIO/UPP combo works great. Valugard OEM One Step as a cleaner/prep then UPP works equally as well. Poorboys Pro Polish/UPP also great. Next combo to try will be Poorboys Pro Polish followed by 2-3 coats of UPP followed by EX.

I'm reluctant to top UPP with a carnauba for fear that it will become a dust magnet. From what I've seen UPP on it's own holds very little dust.

Natty,

Please post your results of UPP being topped with EX. I have 3 coats of EX on one car, 3 coats of UPP on another, both black. The UPP car has a dark blue metallic flake to it that UPP seems to enhance.

Both cars look great, to the point I can't see any reason to add S100 to either. So, I am quite interested in seeing your results.

I can see I now need to get Steve's polish line from reading your reviews.

SamIam.....will definetly post results when I do the new combo though it may be a month or so.

According to his post, JGV has already done the UPP topped with EX and seems to prefer it on darker colors.

As for topping UPP with P21s...CharlesW has done that and if memory serves me he didn't really notice much of a difference...if any. I don't recall what color it was on.
