Pinstripe question

What do you consider the best and easiest pinstripe's to apply. I know there are many manufactures making stripes, but what is your choice? I am sure many detailers are offering this service as an add on, to both dealers and the retail field as well. If not, whats the "charge out price per job and what is the best product". I am an old school guy, that said I like paint but many don't offer the service 'SIGN SHOPS". And most are not freehand they use a "tape" and paint between the lines. Yes this is a sign shop job I know"PAINT ON", but some shops offer the stick on jobs.:inspector::howdy

If many don't offer the service (paint), then that's one way to distinguish yourself. IMO paint is also a more durable and high-end way to do it.

Your'e competing with not only detail pros but any numbnut who can buy a roll of pinstripes at Auto Zone going the decal route.

This hobbyist's opinion only, no offense to those making beaucoup $$ doing just the opposite.

You are right about "PAINT" its a work of art and personalized for sure.

I like the stick on ...only because i can be fickle.....so i can change the stripe to something else or nothing at all. I have a friend who works as a painter at chevy so i can get whatever i want.

I know that some detail shops offer the stick on stuff, I also know the dealers get a nice price if they do it.:bow

I've used tape stripes for years. 3M and ProStripe both have a solid product. There are pros and cons to either tape or paint. Both will show their age over time. Paint stripes, even the best, fade. Tape stripes will eventually crack. Tape stripe is easily replaced where paints stripes are tough to duplicate should there be an accident or other need. You can buy a long roll of dual stripe tape for around $15. It will do approximately 3 vehicles if the striping is conservative.

I've found that the people that like a pin stripe are those in 35 to 50 year old range. Pin stripes will break up a solid panel if that is the customers desire. You can put a dual stripe down the side of most vehicles in about 45 minutes. I don't have an idea what people would be willing to pay for the service.

I like getting stripe that has a 1/8" stripe, 1/16" space and a 1/16"stripe. You can get this format in two separate colors or both being the same color. You can master this in a couple of vehicles. The secret being don't break the stripe until you are done making the line. It can be pulled and reset multiple times to make sure it sits where you want it to be. Once it's where you want it use a soft cloth and slight pressure to press it down. Too much pressure will make it lift and run in front of itself. Once the top clear layer is pulled it will stay put. A few more passes with a soft cloth and it's down until you decide to pull it off.

You can remove it with a buffer if you aren't careful but if you're paying attention you can pass over the stripe without problem. I would probably not try my hand at painting a stripe but the tape stripes aren't rocket science.
