I just got home from the vet. Took my dog in because she wasn't feeling well since Friday. She was sick yesterday and this morning she wasn't herself. They did blood work and found her liver isn't working right. Not sure what's wrong but they are going to keep her tonight and tomorrow and give her antibiotics and do an ultrasound. They said they still might not be able to know what's wrong after they do this and may need to do a biopsy. The other options weren't that great and I dont want to put her down. I hope it's just an infection or something treatable without surgery. She's 9 years old and has a lot of life but I'm not sure how she will recover from it.

It's hard having pets. They become part of the family and when things like this happen it's though to make a decision and know that you're doing the right thing.

Sorry to hear that, man. I had to put my husky down in June. She would have been 14 in July. Hopefully everything turns out okay.

I'm sorry to hear about your husky. I still think about my old dog all the time and how great she was. This one has been a hand full but she isn't bad. I really thought she would live a lot longer because she is so active and energetic. My old dog died at 10 and wasn't nearly as active. I hope everything works out, I'm just playing the waiting game right now. Hope to hear what the ultrasound shows later today.

I can agree they become so much of your daily life and routine. We have three, two Aussies and a Schipperke all very active. The Schipperke is 14 with some health issues, not looking forward to when things get worse. Out Blue Merle has had cancer but has been ok for two years.

I wish the best for your dog. I know how they really are family.

The vet suggested things it might be (cancer, tumor, infection) or something else. I'm hoping for infection only.

I "rescued" her when no one else wanted her. I got her from a person I worked with that was moving and couldn't keep her. They gave her away twice and she came back. I got her and I couldn't imagine wanting her. She is the sweetest dog and loves everyone, especially kids.

There is a poem somewhere but I can't find it at the moment but it is written from a dogs perspective on getting old. The gist of it is asking for it's master and life long friend to be there through the end. I had a old dog that came into bad health and couldn't be cured and was in pain. The decision was made to put him down and end his suffering. It was a hard decision. I held him for the longest time at the Vet and when we had said our good-bys he sighed and went to sleep in my arms. Brings tears to my eyes as I am writing and I still miss him but he is no longer in pain. Hold your dog until the end so she will know you are there for her. I know it's hard.

We rescued our husky, too. She was abused and starved. She still growled at men she didn't know the day we put her down. Got her when I was 7.

pets are a such a blessing, where would we be without dogs ?. you have our prayers that your special dog will be ok.

My prayers are with you. We've got 2 dogs and they're our 'kids' as we don't have any. They're a huge part of our life and I feel your pain. Our newest one got real sick when she was a puppy and I was devastated until she pulled through.

Hang in there and we'll keep you in our prayers.

They did the ultrasound around 5 yesterday and I was told the doctor would call to let me know what they found. After 2 1/2 hours I couldn't wait anymore so I went up there to see Honey and to see what I could find out. Honey was still drowsy but she perked up when she heard our voice. I spent about an hour with her just holding and petting her. The veterinarian said part of her liver looks abnormal. They aren't sure what it is yet but it could be cancer or inflammation from an infection she has had for a while. The head doctor will look at her today and at all the results from the tests. I'll see what she thinks today. I hope it's just inflammation because I don't want to put her through surgery at her age.

I would like to thank all of you for your support. Everyone here has always been nice and I really appreciate it

The vet called and told me that Honey is doing really well. They were thinking she might be able to come home today but they have not received the results back from the lab for one of her tests so they would like to keep her tonight like the original plan.

This doctor seemed more optimistic that it was something we could treat at home and she will be fine. She seems to think it's not a liver problem but rather a intestinal problem that is causing the liver to have problems. This doctor is the head of the animal hospital so I'm hoping she is right. She seems to be more positive about being something minor and treatable.

Dog Ten Commandments

1. My life is likely to last 10 to 15 years. Any
separation from you will be painful remember
that before you get me.
2. Give me time to understand what you want of me.
3. Place your trust in me- it is crucial to my well
being.
4. Do not be angry at me for long, and do not lock
me up as punishment.
5. You have your work, your entertainment, and your friends.
I only have you.
6. Talk to me sometimes. Even if I don't understands your words,
I understand your voice when it is speaking to me.
7. Be aware that how ever you treat me, I will never forget.
8. Remember before you hit me that I have teeth that could
easily hurt you, but I choose not to bite you because I
love you.
9. Before you scold me for being uncooperative, obstinate,or lazy,
ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I
might not be getting the right food, or I have been out to
long, or my heart is getting to old and weak.
10. Take care of me when I get old; you too will grow old. Go
with me on difficult journeys. Never say: "I cannot bear to
watch" or "Let it happen in my absence." Everything
is easier for me if you are there, even my death.
Remember that I love you.

That's the poem I was referring to in an earlier post but couldn't find it...Thanks for posting it

I got to bring Honey home the other day. She's beginning to get back to her old self. When I brought her home she acted a little strange but I think she wanted to make sure she was home for good.

I have to take her back next week for a check up and to get results from some tests. The vet says her liver values were slightly better than when I brought her in so we all are hoping it's treatable with the medications they've prescribed. The only way to absolutly know what the problem is would require a biopsy. The vet agreed with me that it's probably not the best corse at this time given her age. I'm just glad she is home and getting back to normal.

Rocket..sorry to hear about your troubles. I hope everything works out. Pets are truly part of the family. I have two cockers and have gone through the loss of a pet and it's terrible.

Well I've been taking my dog to the vet every few weeks to keep an eye on any process she might have been making. I went 2 weeks ago and they just got a new test they can run to check for lymphoma. I had them run the test and I got the results yesterday. It came back positive which we kind of expected since we thought there was a possibility for liver cancer. The options are much like they are for humans. Chemo is the main treatment but the doctor said the prognoses is not good for dogs and it's really not curable.

I'm trying to decide what I'm going to do. For now she is doing well and seems to be happy

Doing what she does best

I really hate to hear this. We have an Aussie his was in the nasal area and very fast growing. They removed it and he is ok but still gets monitored. His type usually goes to bone and is rapidly terminal at that point. We were told the same about chemotherapy.

All I can say is enjoy every moment. It amazes me how they can be sick and so giving. Your in a different position but I understand some things and thoughts when this happens. Best of luck.
