Petroleum based product question

Welcome to Autopia. Most products are petroleum based I believe. Why do you want that? How much is the Diamond kote sealant? If it's more than $30 it's a rip off. Do a search on sealants here at Autopia and you will find info on a lot of "quality" sealants.
 
No not looking to buy, I had some issues with a pretoleum based contaminent on the surface of a car I did recently and was wondering what it might be. I am leaning towards something in a dealer propack kit because the car was not that old.



So I'm just wondering what products I could be coming across. I feel this is not an isolated incident. Also what kind of cleaners people recommend to totally strip that crap off a surface?

What do you mean by pretoleum based contaminent? As far as getting it off, it's just a polymer sealant so wash it with a strong soap and its gone, or use a pre wax cleaner. The dealerships don't use quality sealants.
 
You would be surpised how tough that stuff can be. I have had some rainbowing occur during my application of X-Kote last week. I had to continually work the panel over and over until the contaminnet was removed, that's something I do not want to do. I thought I had cleaned the car quite thouroughly but still there was residue on the car so now I am considering a mild acid wash on the surface after a full degrease. It seems to happen only on cars that come from the East ( mainly ONT and Que). I'm thinking air pollution might also be etching into the surface, hence the acid wash idea.
 
Diamond Cote has petroleum in it as a delivery system. It employs flourinated monomers which polymerize in the presence of water (humidity) and leaves a "Teflon-like" protective film. This residual film resists harsh environmental contaminants such as acid rain, road salts, pollution, oils, salt spray, UV and the like.



I liked it myself, I had no issues with it. I would compare it to Mother's Reflections.. except it is somewhat thicker than Mother's. It also has a very mild abrasive like Mother's , almost unnoticeable though, unless you let it dry too long.

I bought mine in bulk from autogeek, it retailed for $17.99 a bottle, after shipping I paid about $4 a bottle for mine.
 
Thanks for the info. I am looking for a good product that will totally strip it off a car. I have had good results so far with Luster Glaze Formula XD but it's always good to hear other options.

Let me see if I understand, you are using this X-kote to remove contaminates(ie: dirt and such) from your paint as well as sealing it at the same time? Silk said this stuff has an abrasive as well. Why would you want a sealant that has an abrasive in it? A true sealant or wax has no abrasives in them. You will find these work much better and provide better protection as well. Forget about using acid on a car thats rediculous. I would polish a car before I ever used an acid. What is your detailing process? If you washed then clayed the car there would be no contaminates on the paint and if it wasn't completely clean use a cleaner polish. To remove water etching you will need to polish the paint and possibly compound it as well. If I were you I would do a lot of reading in the learn section here on Autopia, it may save you from damaging your car.
 
No I am not using the X-Kote to remove dirt, and no my product is not abrasive, but if for some reason not all the sealant ( if it's pretroleum based) has been removed from the surface if you work the X-Kote back and forth on the affected area it will work off that contaminent once it's gone you refresh your applicator and lay the final layer over that panel. X-Kote is powerful. If you were to use it on a spraybombed fender flare or quick blow in job it will break down that cheap paint and remove it.



What I need to do to use my product is not like traditional detailing so there is not a whole lot of techniques I can gain here that will help me. I am just looking for good cleaner for petroleum based products.
 
yo miah, we have this wacky shat at work called "future wash" it is POTENT...you wash the car, mist this stuff on all over, let it dry (it crystalizes, it's pretty neat) then you soap it off. It removes fallout and leaves the surface super squeaky clean...I'll read up a little more for you, but it might work good for your situation.



although it's so potent, I wouldn't recommend using it in your shop without a vapor mask on.
