Pet peeve drivers!

What activities of other drivers make you the maddest? For example, is it the first guy in a line of 25 cars at a red light, who accelerates to a 14 sec. 0-30 time when the light turns green, thereby insuring only about 3 cars behind him make the light?

Or is it the guy in long line of cars waiting for a light, who waits until your light finally turns green before he then waves ahead of him a car exiting from a fast food restaurant to your right, while you and 12 other drivers have to wait and end up not making the light due to his being a "Good Samaritan" (in his eyes).....

the drivers that are irritating are the ones right in front of you who don't use their turn signals and people who tailgate. also, the many who still use a cell phone while driving as if there conversation is more important than getting in an accident and hurting or possibly killing someone. i think the minimum fine for the 1st offense should be at least $250 and a point on their record (have to go to traffic school to take the point off)...

Pulling out in front of traffic. Then doing less than the speed limit expecting everybody to slow down that just drives me crazy.

The city my business is in cites for cell phone texting and distraction. I don't disagree with it either. I almost lost my being by a yellow light distracted driver less than a month ago.

Tell me how a 4600 pound vehicle gets picked up and spun 180 degrees and thrown 70 feet in a 35mph zone doing the speed limit. There were not even skid marks. My engine was sitting on the left front wheel and my legs sheared the steering column off the firewall. Engine was in the interior of the vehicle and this was a Land Rover hit by a Mitsubishi Lancer.

The worst is when the Toyota Prius gets on the freeway, and immediately merges into the left lane "passing lane". They then set their speed to the indicated best mpg gauge they have on their dash. This is usually 58mph. or so. Basically, the Prius dashboard is like a video game to get the best gas mileage.

I can deal with the tailgating, the no turn signals, and slow driving. Two things that make me really pissed are:

-Cell phone distracted drivers. My beloved B5 S4 was destroyed by one. Now I lean on it when I see someone that is distracted

-People that give me the bird after they almost crash into me because they aren't paying attention, and I honk to remind them that I am there.

When that happens to me, I comment to my wife: "He's not in a hurry to get anywhere; he was just in a hurry to pull out in front of me."

By the way, have they passed a law that you have to come to a complete stop when making a right turn? It kills me when I'm 100 yards behind someone who's turning right and I still have to brake to keep from rear ending them when I'm traveling 40 mph. I guess they have tires that won't withstand a 90 degree turn at 10 mph.

Mike

I thought of another good one. Getting honked at for stopping at a stop sign or red light turning right.

I could make a long list for this one.

This one I run across the most:

But my absolute biggest is the idiots that don't know how to merge and come to a complete stop at the end of an on ramp. I have had some near misses because I'm looking over my shoulder to find and time the spot I'm going to merge into.

You're right! The guy who thinks it's prudent to try to merge into 70 mph traffic by going 35 on the entrance ramp!

Don't forget the dirtbag driving a beater that replies "What's the big deal?" when you yell at him when he opens his door against yours in the parking lot....:wall

Oh. No. I mean actually come to a complete stop because they can't merge. Like they are now going to somehow accelerate to 70 mph. in 30 ft.

That's not merging that's "blending" with traffic.

Just about everything on the road peeves me these days, drivers are getting worse and worse. But one that's gotten me lately is sitting in traffic next to an on ramp and people behind you pull onto the on ramp, pass some cars and then get mad because you don't want to let them in front of you because of the ******** move they just pulled.

They had a newspaper article here where people could list their driving pet peeves. One guy said, "When I'm on the interstate, I like to go 5 mph over the speed limit, so I get in the far left lane so I don't have to change lanes to pass slower cars. I hate it when people tailgate me, but I'm driving as fast as I can AT A SAFE SPEED, so if anyone wants to pass me, they are going too fast to be safe." In other words, this guy unilaterally sets 75 mph as the fastest SAFE speed you can drive..so he's not letting you pass if you go faster than that.

...and people wonder why there is road rage with idiots like that blocking the passing lane.......

Mike

Most of this slow-driver stuff irritates me as well, especially left-lane-bandits ("I don't care how much your car cost or how fast it goes in magazine tests...get out of my way!"), but I do try to remember that I'm the guy who wants to exceed the speed limit (so I guess what I'm thinking is really "get out of my way so I can break the law" :o ). Now those who tie up traffic by driving way *under* the limit are another matter!

But it's those distracted/impaired drivers and the dummies who otherwise overdrive their abilities who *really* bother me.

[INSERT usual rant about the need for frequent testing and retraining HERE] Driving is a complex, and perishable, skillset.

Why don't people use their cruise control on the interstate? If I set my cruise on say 72, there will be one or two people that will pass me, then slow so much I have to brake, then they speed up again, then slow again....Their speed will vary between 80 and 60 regardless of traffic, requiring 300 cars to pass them at some point in a 50 mile drive.

It's not the guy going 90 in the open far left lane that causes accidents; it's the guy in the middle or right lane whose speed varies so much that he/she forces numerous vehicles to change lanes to avoid him/her. Accidents occur when cars are changing lanes back and forth.

Yeah, or at least maintain a (reasonably) consistent speed manually.

I, and especially my wife, generally only use cruise when doing a speed that won't result in a citation, otherwise the immediate deceleration of merely lifting off the gas is better than having to tap the brake pedal.

In my native state of Pennsylvania, the practice is to keep right, pass left. Speed limits notwithstanding, and regardless of what speed anyone thinks is safest, we think of the "passing" lane as the left lane. "Keep right, except to pass" is another way to describe it. When driving back and forth from IL, where i now live, to PA, I always notice that this idea is not all that universal in other states. I really think there would be more contentedness on the roads if everyone would just follow this one basic idea.

I've noticed that!! Seriously, driving back and forth, from PA to IL on Route 70, I do see weird things from Priuses as far as holding those sort of medium speeds for miles and miles in all different lanes.

I must drive through a different PA when I go visit the in-laws in Pittsburgh.
