Peeling Wheel Wells, help.

Was washing the car today and was hosing off one of my wheel wells. At first I thought it was mud, but as I sprayed it with a tight stream from the hose the stain got bigger. I realized at that point that the black was coming off.

This car is barely 9 months old. Should this be happening already?

The only thing I spray in the wheel wells is a cleaner/degreaser (the orange one from home depot)

How can I fix this?

My wheel wells did the same exact thing.

I use rubberized undercoating. Looks good, cuts down on noise from gravel, and lasts a long time. It sprays kinda thick, but the texture matches perfect. It's easy to keep clean and very black looking.

I can't remember the brand I use, but it's in a blue can. Costs about $7 at WalMart or Advance Auto. I would suggest not getting the type that contains asphalt. I made that mistake once, and was not pleased. It has an asphalt smell that takes days to go away. And the color has a brownish tint to it in certain lighting.

As with any aerosol type product, take precautions when applying. I use painter's tape on my wheel well lips, and plenty of newspaper over anything I don't want it on. If you do accidentally get overspray somewhere, any type of mineral spirits type solvent will remove it if used soon after. I would re-wax any spots you use a solvent on.

I'd agree with DH, I used OTC wheel well coatings with good results previously. My newest vehicle (3 months old Hyundai Entourage) has plastic wheel wells They'll never rust but it will be interesting to see how they survive otherwise over the life of the vehicle.

Kn0x- You might check with the dealership and find out what they use to refinish that, then you could consider getting some of that product. Might be the easiest way to make the repair invisible and you'd only have to do the spots that need it. When I've used some aftermarket products, I've sometimes ended up having to do all the wheelwells because the repair didn't match the remaining factory stuff.
