PC7424XP acting very strange with a certain pad

I detailed a new black Kia Optima today and had an issue when I was doing a test spot with a 5.25" Optimum cutting pad with Optimum Hyper Polish. As soon as I switched the machine on, it started jumping all over the place and grabbing on the paint like I never felt before at, this happened at any speed. The machine started making strange noises, like clicking and sounding really messed up. It was so bad I thought the machine had broken in my truck on the way to the customer. Switched to a white 6.5 LC foam pad with the Hyper Polish and it was beautiful. What the heck happened with that Optimum pad?? I actually put the pad flat on the ground on top of a MF, switched the machine on and there was no rotation or any kind of movement of the backing plate, just the machine spinning up, which really made me think I broke the machine. But then switched to the different pad and backing plate and it was fine. Anyone have any ideas?

The Opt pad was the first combo I tried and just before I tried it I switched from the 6" backing plate to the 5" plate. Could something have happened to the machine when I switched plates? Then when I switched back to the 6" plate it reversed whatever got messed up? I don't know but it scared the crap out of me, I thought my machine was toast.

Tomorrow I'm going to try to duplicate the problem on my personal vehicle.

Sounds like the washer that sits on the plate either is too short or fell off.

The washer is a spacer and should be tall enough so that the rivets on the backing plate don't hit the counterbalance when it spins.

Check the backing plate and counterbalance to see if you notice any scrape marks.

This was the problem. I didn't think about that because my 6" plate does not need a washer and I rarely change backing plates. Thanks Kevin!
