pc7424 not getting it done?

Ok lately ive notice that on certain cars with harder clear coat ive been having problems getting the results I want.



Im using a pc7424, yellow cutting pad, and poorboys ssr3 but it just seems like its not removing enough and when im finished there is still some swirl marks left.



Im going over it with 1z polish and sometimes a finish polish.



Why is there swirl marks when Im done?



Does that mean that the polish is cutting deep enough or what?



Im starting to think maybe I need a rotary?

I am going slow and using the overlapping checkerboard pattern.



It just doestn seem to be getting rid of the swirls like I would hope for
 
Ive never used the 1z but the yellow pad is pretty nasty on the pc. So maybe the 1z is not aggressive enough to take out the swirls that may be cause by the Pb and yellow pad.



Please tell us exactly what pad/product you are using and how you are using it
 
Do you have 4" pads for your PC7424? Smaller pads allow more pressure to be exerted at the pad edge for better cut/correction. Yes, a 6" or 6-1/2" pad will have greater speed at the edges, but the force is not there as it ends up in deflection (bending) of the pad . (Or so the theory goes)

Also, what is the make and year of car and what color is the paint?

I assume it's not a car with Ceramic Clear Coat (CCC).

Some makes of cars have harder clearcoats.

Some colors (like White) are harder because of the pigments they add for the color, making them more difficult to "buff out".

You can also try some Meg's Utlimate Compound in a 16 oz bottle for about $9.00, available at Wal-Mart. If you want to step up from this, try Megs M105, but its about $25 -$30 for the quart (32 oz) size, available at most auto parts/auto body supply stores over-the-counter (OTC). Research this forum about using the Ken Brown Method (KBM) with these super-micro abrasive technologies (SMAT). Good results with these "compounds" require different techniques, including priming the pad.
 
Yep, 4" pads. M105, used with 4" pads, can do anything that's sensible to do.



Orange foam, PFW, even the Cyclo/Edge brand yellow and blue wool. With 4" pads, M105 will work even on very hard clear.



Gotta use the right technique of course, and it still takes a while.



Follow the M105 with the 1z and it oughta be ready for the final polish and/or LSP.



If the PC/4" takes too long, I'd recommend a Flex instead of a rotary; I haven't touched my rotaries since I got the Flex.
 
I started with a PC 7 years ago and 6 1/2 inch pads. I soon learned that correction was limited. So I went 4 inch pads and much much better.. I since graduated to a Makita rotary and am so glad I did. Gotta go 4 inch with PC.

Yeah, that always makes me :confused: too. I dunno....maybe they don't want people to start second-quessing the abilities of the PC/products/whatever. But then people *do* start having second thoughts once their "kits" fail to get the job done anyhow :nixweiss
