PC Speeds

I have been asking all kinds of newbie questions lately and really appreciate all of the helpful input so far, but I have more questions. . . lol

What speed setting is ideal for each pad / condition?

My car has 75k miles on it and has never really been SUPER-DE-DUPER-LY polished before. I have washed and waxed and thats about it. but on monday I am going all out and bringing her back to full health, w00t w00t.

what speed setting on teh PC is idle for each pad? like a range like 2 (easiest) - 5.5 (never ever taken care of paint). I am sure mine would be ALMOST al the way to the harshest setting, but not quite.

Thanks in advance.

PS - I cant DL the detailers book either, cause I run a MAC. And clue as to when a MAC version would be out????

whoops. I guess that would help ALOT, my bad.

I ordered a kit with :

Porter Cable #7336 Orbital Polisher/Sander with wrench, foam pad/plate combo, sanding disk/sandpaper, #6 counter weight for 6.5" pads and up

6" Velcro Pad Holder

7.5" Lake Country VC Cutting Pad (oxidation and scratch removal)

7.5" Lake Country VC Polishing Pad (swirl removal, polishing, one-step cleaner/waxes)

7.5" Lake Country VC Finishing Pad (liquid or paste wax application)

(2) 6" Terry Bonnets (removing polishes, waxes and cleaning glass, leather, vinyl)

6" Flat Foam Polishing Pad (supports terry bonnets.. not shown in photo)

4" Mini Foam Polishing Pad (polishing in/around constricted areas)

4" Mini Foam Finishing Pad (applying waxes in/around constricted areas)

4" Velcro Pad Holder (for 4" foam pads)

-------

Steps I plan to take:

Wash with dawn soap (no dry)

Meguiars Smooth Surface Clay Bar

Wash w/ Meguiars Gold Class Car wash (dry)

Meguiars Scratch X Remover

Meguiars Step 1

Meguiars Step 2

Meguiars Step 3

Meguiars Wax

Unfortunately i do not have enough $$ to buy all of th fancy products. But I will in a few months for another through cleaning. Also, not sure if this makes a difference, but I store my car outside in the harsh S FL sun, and it RARELY sees any garage life :( .

For the polishing I would suggest using the polishing pad and speed 6. If that does not seem to cut it go with the cutting pad and speed 6 for the first round of polishing and then the polishing pad and speed 6 for the second round.

Does that make sense?

Speed 6 all around. got it :2thumbs:

When should I consider dropping the speed to like 2 or 3?

Thanks for the help :)

Personally, I hardly drop the speed below 6 unless I am putting on the final step like the wax or the sealant. Then I use speed 2 or 3.

the scratchX that you listed is the only product that will actually remove defects out of the ones that you listed. If you want to remove swirling, your going to need new polishing products.

I already know this. but I am out of $$ and it will have to do for now. Next time (3 months-ish) I will buy new good stuff and go to town again with it.

I nearly spent $500 on my car this week alone. So I had to draw the line somewhere.

I dont own a PC, but i'm interested in purchasing one soon..

When we start start off, after we dab the polish over the area, do we first start off in speed 2/3 over the area first then speed it up to 5/6

or

do we use speed 2/3 for a few seconds then speed it up?

After you coat your pad with the polish about 1 inch from the edge of the pad in a circular motion and maybe use an X pattern in the center then you dab the pad over the work area your about to tackle then while the pad is on your paint turn it on setting 3 or 4 work the area over once then crank it up higher, I use the highest setting 6.
