i want to get a pc and was wondering if it's possible to burn the paint with one? i have a red truck and just want to remove the swirls on it. i guess it would be best to tape off the body lines on my truck and all edges? i'm going to start with meguiars m80 and if it's not enough use m83. would you use a polishing pad with each product? also what the best method for using the the pc? i've read where you go vertical and then horizontal. does this sound good? also how much pressure should i apply? my truck probaly has light to moderate swirls depending on the body panels.

thanks for any info

First off...I am not a pro as many on here. I bought a PC and I love it. I have a black 94 camaro that had some swirls, minor scratches etc... Keep in mind black will show everything. I bought my PC and it came with Lake Country pads and I can tell you that I have farted around trying different combos for about 20hrs on my car and no signs of wear etc... Anyway, I am amazed at the results and here is what I did. By the way, there was a post earlier last week where a guy burnt his paint but there may be previous damage that was done to the area. I obtained the best results with the following.

1. wash
2. clay
3. wash
4. SSR2.5 with orange LC pad 5.5 speed
5. SSR 2.5 with white LC pad 5.5
6. SSR 1.0 with white LC pad 4.5
7. SSR 1.0 with LC black/greay pad 4.5
8. Megs #7 with black/grey pad 3
9. Megs #26 with black/grey pad 3

The car now looks stunning. I suggest you look around on the site as there is more information then you will ever need. I think BLKyukon had some great posts on breaking down polishes etc... Good luck!

Use the least aggressive first... that goes for polishes, pads, pressure etc. There are hundreds of theads that talk about how to use the PC. Use the search feature on this site...

Contrary to popular opinion, I think you can damage paint with a PC just as you can by hand.
An aggressive product and an aggressive application can go through paint easier than you might think.
Because of that, I don't even own a "cutting" pad. A polishing pad is very unlikely to do any damage, but with too aggressive of a product, I think it could.
FWIW, many years ago I rubbed through paint with a piece of turkish towel and the old Meguiar's #4. I don't know if it had diminishing abrasives or not, but I think I kept using enough of it that the abrasives never had a chance to break down and I managed to rub through to primer on single stage paint.

Yes you can burn paint with a PC, BUT it's normally fairly hard to do if you take care. I just read a post (I can't remember where) the guy was using the PC, doing it correctly, but ran into a car with unnaturally thin paint and burned it to primer.

Other than that, as long as you are careful around corners and edges, the PC is extremely safe.

Found it, here's the LINK
