PC Beginner ???'s

I thinking of going all out this weekend and buying a PC but don't understand the purpose of some of the "accessories".

EG - Counterweight?

Backing Plate?

Different Pads / Bonnets

Any help / guidance would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Norahcrv

PS - please don't ask me to search, 'cuz I've done that, and I find the answers only add to my confusion - if you could please point me to a particular thread/post, I would appreciate it.

norahcrv,

By Monday I will publish V.01 of my Porter Cable 7424 User's Guide. I got bored writing, so I two days delayed.

Since you need something this weekend.

Some people purchase the 7336 PC, because it has the 6" counterweight, then using a 5" packing plate and pad. Some claim to reduce vibration and reduces wear and tear.

On paint that requires less attention, most purchase a polishing pad and a finishing pad.

A bonnet such as the Meguiar's Ultimate Bonnet is used to remove product and is made out of MF's.

You may purchase the 7224 PC, which has the 5" counterweight, (nothing wrong with this model) 5" backing plate, 6" pads to get started. Don't use the same pad for different product use.

The different pads are for different steps and have different density.

The cutting pads are used for stronger polishes and swirls

Polishing pads for polish

Finishing pad to apply sealant or wax

Don't waste your time on the bonnets, it is much easier to just buff off by hand w/ MF.

The counterweight isn't really needed unless you go for the 7.5 inch pads.

I did my first auto Sat. I went and looked at the 7224 and found it to be very heavy and awkward for me. I found a small 6"

pc at Auto Zone for twenty bucks. I like the size and the ability to get into tight places. It worked fine and I am totally pleased with it. If you are going to be using a pc every week or commercially you would probably want the 7224 model.

It is a Road X Pedition Model # 1-4526 6" Palm buffer-polisher and I may have said that I purchased it from Atuo Zone but it was from Advance Auto Parts here in N.C. It was 19.95 plus tax and came with two pads. The store also sells additional pads seperately I think they were around 5.00 for a pack of two or three. I used NxT on my new Toyota Sequoia which is a fairly large vehicle. The first application and removal took about an hour and half. I did another last night in about an hour. It really saves the old elbow. What every you do, do not apply heavy coats to the pad it will not work as well as light coats.
