Hello,
I have been cruising this forum for a while now and finally registered cause I have a question. I am shopping around for a PC 7424 so I make sure I do not over spend. I have noticed that Griots Garage offers the PC 7424 for 199.00. The Velcro backing plate that comes with it is "made of rubber and has holes on the back to dissipate heat". At least that is what they say. Every other Velcro backing plate that I have seen does not have these holes. So my question is......Does it matter?
 
You do not need the holes in the backing plate if you are going to buff your vehicle with it .. It does not generate much heat if any ...

I would search around for the 7424 in non auto-detail-related places. I haven't bought one yet, but I did a search a few weeks ago on "Porter Cable" and found that some sites that aren't catering to the auto detailer enthusiast had better prices on these. A good example is that on the Meg's site, they sell a "rebadged" 7424 (at least that's what it looks like to me) for something like 230 bucks. That just seems like a lot for a 7424.

Boy I need to learn how to spell and finish my post before submiting it.
Lowes sells the same basic machine but the model number is 7336.
It has a 6" counterweight which works better with the 6 or 6 1/2 pads anyway ... It comes with some accessories which allow you to use it as a sander. Price is usually $109.00
 
Good price on the PC 7336 at Lowes.

I'm not sure of the differences between the 7336 and the 7424; However, the best price I've ever seen for the 7424 is from Coastal Tool... I bought mine there...

Wow that is a great price for the PC. They even throw in the backing plate. I'm glad I left this post before I bought one. Since every one is so helpful could someone tell me the best pads to use for this machine (i.e. brand) and a good combintion of products to use on my car? I already have the Zaino system but it has been in my shed since last june so I don't know how good it will be. Thanks for all the info!

P.S. I have a Black 89 GTA with enamel Paint. I am includung a picture.
 
Haven't tried the Edge pads yet but I am going to ... I have used Meguiars pads with great results.
Note: Meguiars Pads are 6 1/2" diameter ... Their backing plate is 5" diameter which gives more clearance between the edge of the pad and the backing plate ... I think this is a good idea on their part.
I can only imagine the damage the backing plate would do to the paint. PAC sells the Meg's pads as well.
 
I love the Edge DA pads for the Porter Cable......so many options!!

As for the Meg's PC, it is made by Porter Cable.
 
I was just about to start an exact thread like this, good thing i read this one first.

So, do i have this straight, the 7424 PC which we are all discussing is basically the SAME thing the Meguiars is marketing for roughly $230?



Also, for all of you who have experience with hand application of cleaners, polishes and waxes....and who have subsequently switched to a PC, can you give me a rough estmate of how much time your saving with the porter cable?
