Paste Wax Use for Pro's

Hi guys, wanted to get some fellow pro's opinion on this.

Lately, I have been leaning more and more towards the use of quality paste waxes over sealants for my clients vehicles. I purchased some products from a member here a few weeks ago and included was some unopened Victoria's Wax and Dodo Juice Rubbish Boys. I already use Meguiar's Ultimate Paste Wax frequently, mostly because it is VERY sun friendly. Started using this trio more often and am really liking it.

I have found with the use of quality paste waxes you have a much deeper, glossier look. Most of my mid level detail package clients are looking for pretty and shiny over protection and perfection anyhow, and it seems that paste waxes fit that need. Paste waxes also don't really take any longer than most sealants to apply and remove, other than Opti-Seal.

Now don't get me wrong, I love sealants. I think you are hard pressed to get a "wetter" look than by using Poxy or Speed, and nothing is easier to use than Opti-Seal, but it seems these paste waxes just overall look better.

What do you guys and gals think? Am I going backward instead of forward in my thinking on this one, or should I start investing in some nice paste waxes and see where it goes from here? What do you folks mostly run to for LSP's?

One thing I do not want to do is just buy into fluff marketing on paste waxes, if I am going to spend $40+ on a tub of wax, I want to make sure that it is going to be something excellent that is going to set my work apart.

What do you folks think of:

Dodo Supernatural

Pinnacle Souveran

Wolfgang Fuzion

(don't know if I could ever stomach the price tag on these...)

Or such things as:

Detailers Pride Max Wax

Chemical Guy's Lava

Auto Finesse Temptation

Opinions are welcome! :cool1:

It comes down to several factors for many people and everyone's tastes are different really.

*Ease of use

*Cost

*Durability

I remember the newest wax was always a big rage about 4-5 years ago. With the entrance of the coatings and longer lasting and better looking sealants, I think it's pushed back so many wax users into looking at other options.

The biggest demand in the marketplace is for a cream or liquid wax. We have found the timeline between paste, cream, and liquid, so long as you are dealing with a good product, is very close to the same, as far as length of time between waxes. In the past, there was a big demand for the paste wax, but with the performance and ease of use with the liquid and cream waxes, the demand has shifted dramatically. One important aspect is that the average Joe wants something good/cheap and easy to apply.

The only time I use paste waxes is if the customer request something special or it's about to or is raining. No cure time has benefits every now and then.

Thanks for the input guys. I guess another way to ask the question is that if all things are equal, would you use a paste wax if it provided better appearance to the clients vehicle? Is the difference big enough to justify the hassle compared to machine waxing or sealing?

Grab some collinite 915, it'll give you the paste wax look and its very durable. I also really like Meg's Ultimate, its a great looker as you have found and it does a nice job filling.

Considering most people outside of Autopians and true enthusiasts wouldn't notice the difference, I would want to go with the easiest to apply product that takes the least amount of time. Time is money and I don't need to be applying a product that's any more difficult than it needs to be. If someone requested the best, glossiest look possible and wanted me to use a paste, then I would oblige, but other than that for the pros it's all about the least time spent for the best product possible. For me anyway. There's plenty of liquids out there that take no time at all to apply with a DA that will give an incredible look in 99% of people's eyes and also offer great durability.

Miami Shine from Ardex is one that goes on and off extremely easily in the sun and heat, looks awesome and one of my customers just reported that it lasted more than 6 months on his car that does not get parked in a garage.

As a pro, I'd go with Collinite 476 on daily drivers, pretty durable stuff. Pinnacle Souveran is hard to beat for the price for garage queens. I also have Mitchell & King Rannoch Paste Wax. It isn't cheap ($400 ish depending on the exchange rate) but it looks pretty awesome. Add $30-40 per application, should have enough in a pot for 40 or so cars.

Thanks for input, I'm going to assume all of this is super sun friendly since you are all mobile. :hifive:

Autoglym HD was the flavor of the month a while back, especially when Wally Mart was clearing it out and had it for 10-15 bucks (depending on store). I'm not a paste wax fan by no means, but this stuff, applied with a red pad via PC was easy on and off and gave a beautiful look to my wife's blizzard pearl white Highlander. I have Souveran, Blackfire Midnight Sun, 4-5 Dodo's, Megs, and I will go for the Autoglym everytime.

Agreed. I also feel that 99% of the clients out there would not be able to "see" a difference between any of the waxes and sealants. For that reason I think durability and feel should usually be the more important factors.

I always ask my clients what they are looking for as far as protection and what matters most. If they leave it up to me I will base my decision on the type of car, how it's used, and how it's cared for.

I have the 3 you listed above, along with many others, but of those 3 I will give my $.02.

  • Dodo Supernatural - Most expensive, best looking, nice smooth feel, most fussy (possible sweating issues)
  • Pinnacle Souveran - Warm look, simple to use, doesn't last very long, nice smooth feel
  • Wolfgang Fuzion - Easy to use, better durability, lacks the slickness of the other two.

I also did an article/review on SN and Souveran here.

You may have some issues with a paste on a dark car when its 90+, just work in smaller sections.

Gotcha there. The only paste I've ever used that was 100% no fuss in the sun so far is Meguiar's Ultimate Paste Wax.
