So I'm rather inexperienced @ detailing, as this post is going to make abundantly clear.
Because of Autopia, over the last 18 months I've discovered QEW (wonderful), clay (works well), and NXT Wax (liquid).
I love the results I get on my bright blue metallic WRX from the NXT, but I wanted to try out a paste wax as some seem to have a strong preference for it, and I wanted to see what all the fuss was about.
I went out and bought one of the better OTC pastes, Turtle Wax Ultra Gloss, as I didn't want to spend a fortune on this experiment, and quite a few people say it looks good.
I'd have to say my results are mixed, though likely due to user error, which I'd like to correct.
First, the finish itself was quite nice. Certainly different from what NXT looks like, but I don't mean different in a worse way. NXT tends to (over?)emphasize the metallic nature of my paint, while the TWUG finish was more "laid back" in that regard.
BUT; the application was a nightmare compared to the liquid NXT I've been using for a year now. This is all working on a cool paint surface, freshly washed w/ QEW.
When I first put product onto the applicator (included foam), it went on way too heavy, yet I'd barely get any coverage before I had to dip back in to get more wax. The result being that most of the car was covered way to heavily.
How do I get a paste wax to spread out more thinly and evenly? I'd tried carrying it out further by not adding more wax to the applicator, but then I just got incomplete coverage of the surface.
The other mistake I believe I made was doing the whole car before buffing off the residue. I think this is what the can recommended, but doing this, combined with too heavy application made removing the wax (with a MF towel) serious labor. And even then it left hardened "chalk" in places that I haven't dealt with yet for fear of scratching the paint.
Am I experiencing problems particular to this product, or is this simply a case of improper application? If so, what should I do differently next time to minimize the difficultues?
