Paint Troubled 72 Ferrari Daytona (20 pics with my new DSLR)

Car is a 1972 Ferrari Daytona with original Lacquer paint. The car belongs to my client in which I have completed details on 6 of his cars so far, this being the 7th. I have seen the car before and knew it needed a paint job from the get go. The owner knows it as well but really wants the car to be as original as possible. The mechanical side of the car has been pretty much restored except the suspension. The car will probably repainted at some point.

The paint is cracked, crazed, raised, oxidized, and alligator skinned. My goal was solely to “brighten her up to be a little more presentable until repaint down the road.

Process:

No wash, just Qd’ed to remove moderate dust. No clay since there was a lot of oxidation going to be removed.

EC with white polish pad @ 1700 rpms (Didn’t want to remove “too much paint.) I actually tried wool with EC on a test section and it didn’t make any difference then the EC with polish pad.

Menz FPII / RMG (70/30) with Blue Finesse pad @ 1700rpms -> 1200rpms

LSP = Souveran

All chrome polished with Flitz by hand.

Wheels polished with Flitz with Mother Mini Polish ball and cordless drill @1000rpms

Tires along with underside black trim dressed with Mothers FX Tire Shine

Interior: vacuum, all vinyl and plastic surfaces cleaned with lexol and treated with 303.

No engine bay done.

Process took 9 hours:

ALL THE FOLLOWING PICS WERE TAKEN WITH MY NEW CAMERA (NIKON D40X DSLR), KEEP IN MIND THE CAMERA IS NEW AND I SHOT EVRYTHING IN MANUAL MODE, EVEN IN MANUAL FOCUS!! (HAHA BIG MISTAKE, THE PICTURES DIDN’T TURN OUT THE GREAT) IN THE “AFTER HALOGEN PICS THE FINE “SWIRLING YOU SEE IS ACTUALLY CRACKS IN THE FINISH, OXIDATION WAS JUST HIDING SOME. THE FRONT BUMPER HAD THEM PRETTY BAD.

Here they are owner was very pleased at the turnaround.

Very nice recovery. I did see where there were some issues coming along, but considering that its a '72 and original, I'd say that the paint looks good for a 35 year old.

Yea what sucks is after you remove oxidation you are left with cracked paint underneath. Most areas on the car were REALlY bad. Not that Lacquer finish is the best to being with lol. I just made sure the car got brightened up without incurring further cracking or excessive thinning.

Great Job for the condition that was in. That second to last hood shot was nice.

Nice camera by the way. I can't wait till you get the manuel setting right and see your future pics. I have heard only great things about that camera, plus it is a Nikon. I am jealous!

Again, another great job!

Almost every other day, I have seen you make a new post with ANOTHER Ferrari in the title. :D How many does this guy have? hahah.

What a beautiful car! Seriously, that has got to be one of my favorite Ferarri's now, after looking at it. Great detailing work, nice camera as well.

Thanks for the compliments as always. I stayed up a couple of hours last night playing with the new camera trying to figure out the best lighting for different situations. Probably gonna take me a few good sessions with it to use it properly. I could just put it on AUTO but what would the point of a SLR be! :)

My goodness, that's one beautiful car! Any pictures of the interior? Great work on the paint and the photography.:2thumbs:

She's a real beauty, that'll make him think twice about getting it repainted. Very very nice!

Congrats on the new D40. I was looking at one of those but was turned off by the fact that it takes a very limited selection of lenses. So I went with Canon...
