Paint Sealant and Carnauba Wax Combo

Precision Pros

What are your thoughts about applying Paint Sealant then topping it with one or two coats of Carnauba Wax, or is this additional step just a waste of time?

Thanks,

Greg

Back when sealants looked pretty bad, this was a common practice. With all the great looking sealants, IMO its just a waste of time.

Agree with Dan :xyxthumbs

If you want the "wax look" just use a sealant that provides that.

I can justify the topping if I work at it, but 99% of the time I think it's ill advises (to put it politely), let alone for somebody in a Pro situation.

The most serious "wrong LSP...that sealant isn't right for that paint!" that I ever did (FK1000P on GM Granite Metallic) probably got me more compliments from "real people" than any other LSP on any other vehicle. Like, people coming up to me in parking lots all the time. Sure glad I didn't "top it to make it look right"!

Do what you think is right (protection, ease of use, cost, time..) and see if any customer ever asks for a different look. Hey, you can always accommodate that, right? Not like it's gonna take a whole extra day to throw on a topper if they really, *REALLY* want that. But I bet they never will ;)

I agree. Menz Powerlock, 4Star Ultimate Paint Protection and Werkstat Acrylic Jett Trigger all give a deeper look vs the traditional bright finish left by most sealants. Try one of those if you want a nuba look.

An organic wax applied over a sealant or coating acts as a sacrificial barrier; providing limited resistance to acid rain, bird excrement and the pollutants found in industrial fall out. And by cleaning the vehicles paint surface (Griot’s Paint Prep) thereby removing surface pollutants and then replacing the organic wax on a regular basis. In this case, paint care not only serves aesthetics, but also helps preserve the vehicles finish

Am I reading this right- use Paint Prep to clean things down to the sealant prior to refreshing the organic wax?

If so, wouldn't the Paint Prep also strip the sealant, along with contamination and any remnants of the wax?

Here's one I really don't understand sealants and waxes are both protective layers, the sealant being the more durable. Why would you waste time putting a less durable layer over a more durable?? Seems like a waste of time and money. In Sept and Oct I switch over and use sealant I tell customer's it will be better protection for the winter months. the rest of the yer wax its only $3 or 4 more dollars a gallon so I charge the same for wax or sealant. It should be either or but not both.

rustytruck- While you can tell from my post above that I don't really condone the practice...I can jump over to the other side of the fence long enough to anwer your Q ;)

Topping the sealant with wax can tweak the look, sometime enough for some people to care. And some waxes are at least as durable as some sealants and can even offer better protection; I use UPP on my S8, but its *terrible* as far as protection from stuff like bug-etching. I bet that topping the UPP with Collinite paste wax would save my paint from the nearly immediate damage from those bugs, see...some waxes, and Collinite is one of 'em, are *great* when it comes to protection from stuff like that. And some sealants, like the UPP, are simply lousy at it for some reason.

Oddly enough, the "wax-like sealants" I've used have been pretty mediocre with regard to protection and durability, while the "sealanty-looking" ones have been much better :nixweiss

I tend to think that the sealant/carnauba combo is a waste of time; but I have to qualify this statement. Two years ago I tried the Blackfire Fire & Ice combo (Wet Diamond + Midnight Sun). I probably got more compliments after this than anything else I have done to the car. I honestly could not see an improvement but apparently others could. Fo figure. :noidea:

Funny how others see things differently than we do, huh? I've had that happen a few times, sometimes with a "look" that I wasn't all that happy with.
