paint safe way to unfreeze doors?

hey,

I went out to my car today to get something important and it was frozen shut! I was thinking of spraying something down in there but I'm afraid it will trash the paint. I really need to get in there now, I can wait if I have to, but would really rather not. Would deicer trash the paint? What about deicer windshield washer fluid? I would imagine both are safe.

Thanks

I’ve never had to use water to get a frozen door open, I just lightly (using the heel of my palm) pound around the edges of the door. If it still doesn’t open, I’ll go around from door to door and one will certainly release for me.

Another thing is to put a thin film of tire dressing on the rubber gaskets that seal the door to the body when closed. Make sure the latches are lubed too. All these will keep the moisture at bay and prevent water freezing/seizing.

The Ridgeline has a ¼ mile auto-start so this is no longer a problem for that car, but the Merc is too ‘high-security’ for any auto-start and I’m often dressing the rubber gaskets/door seals.

Hope it helps.

hey thanks for the advice, I'll do that tomorrow (well, later today lol) when I clear the driveway for the guests. I never thought of that. I usually also spray the bottom of the garage door with wd-40 for this same reason.

Good thing is that you opened the doors. The bad thing is it's going to keep happening if you keep getting them wet. I'd definately dress all your inner door seals to keep them from freezing.
