Paint correction and Decals?

My car, like others I am sure, has vinyl decals on all 4 sides and I was wondering how the pros handle this situation:



Do you run the (flex, cyclo, porter cable, makita) machine over the decal lightly to get the paint in the area of the decal or stay away from the decal area all together and do by hand or other method possibly?

I polish the decals because they will also shine up. Just be careful if you have a wool pad in use because if the decal is paper like on the trans am Firebirds you could tear it up. If it is cleared there is no problem. No compound on paper decals ever. Use a light polish to shine them up.
