paint cleaner?

It wouldn't hurt, so if you don't mind the extra step I probably would do it. The two things both "clean" but they go about it differently. After claying and using the paint cleaner, you'll be ready to truly evaluate your paint and see where to go from there.

But if you're gonna use an abrasive polish anyhow, then I could also see skipping the paint cleaner. Not the *optimal* approach, but not a big deal either.

Would using AIO as a paint cleaner be the best idea? I know that it leaves behind something of an acrylic sealant behind. Will that influence defect seeing ability? if so, is there a different cleaner out there that works as well as aio and doesnt leave a sealant behind?

AIO is certainl *VERY* popular around here as a paint cleaner. But I'd probably rather use the DC step #1. I sorta like using less-left-behind paint cleaners like the DC #1 or Pinnacle PCL for cleaning rather than AIO (which I do use for a lot of things, including cleaning wheels prior to applying LSP).
