The kit is a good idea because it comes with the correct backing plate along with a set of pads. I think you'll be using the green and blue pads, they are your polish pads. Green is a bit more aggressive than the blue.
If you're going to be using more than one polish then get an extra green pad (you can never have enough polish pads!).
If you're going to use a polish with the orange pad, then follow up with a less aggressive "final" polish using the green pad.
The blue pad will work well for a glaze/polish like VM (Vanilla Moose) or a cleaner like Klasse AIO.
You'll finish things off by using the grey pad to apply your wax or sealer, unless you decide to do that by hand.
If reading through the forums you see a member say they used XYZ product on a (for example) yellow pad, you need to know who the manufacturer is and the style of the pad. For example the LC yellow pads are a more aggressive cutting pad, while the Meg's yellow pad (W8006) is a polishing pad. The colors, sizes, etc. can be confusing.
